Abstract
Extended Reality (XR) applications have received significant attention in the last decade, with considerable deployment in the fields of tourism and cultural heritage. So far, mainly frameworks for performance in Virtual Reality (VR)and Augmented Reality (AR) have been proposed, mostly involving experiences with a single technology. Moreover, existing XR, VR or AR applications tend to skip the high-level modelling phase by excluding non-programmers from the design process. In order to support designers and developers in creating the multi-reality experience, there are a lot of conceptual models for Virtual Environments (VEs) that provide design guidelines and methodologies. In such analysed models, they are either based on standard languages or are not exhaustive both from astatic and dynamic point of view, especially regarding the interaction between the user and the objects in the environment. However, rare are the models that cover the technologies included in the XR umbrella. In this thesis, we want to fill this gap and study the evolution of XR in tourism, its applications and the main conceptual models existing in the literature. Furthermore, we incorporate the results of a comparative study into a conceptual model framework that is applicable in the XR field. The developed conceptual model is experimentally evaluated through the proposed use case, an example of experience modelling in a nuragic complex.
