Abstract
In this master's thesis the mechanical behaviour of a composite structure which consists of a sandwich panel and an additional sandwich panel was studied both experimentally and by calculations. The tests analysed in the thesis were related to the EU-project Ensuring Advancement in Sandwich Construction through Innovation and Exploitation (EASIE) in which Department of Structural Engineering and Building Technology of Aalto University School of Science and Technology was involved. The face layers of the sandwich panels used in the tests were flat and were made of steel sheets or glass-fibre laminates. The core layer in all of the sandwich panels was made of polystyrene foams. Different types of analytical and numerical models were used to simulate the mechanical behaviour of the system consisting of a sandwich panel and an additional sandwich panel. The core layer of the sandwich panel was modelled using the ideally elastic-plastic model based on deformation theory. The material parameters for the deformation theory were determined from Ramberg-Osgood type shear deformation stress curve. The interaction between the ordinary sandwich panel and the additional sandwich panel was modelled allowing frictionless slipping in the horizontal, i.e., axial direction but keeping the panels in contact in vertical, i.e. in the depth direction. Fixings were modelled using a simple ideally elastic-plastic spring model. The finite-element model in this master's thesis was based on plane stress elements. The program uses 9-node bi-quadratic rectangle-elements for the core layer, 3-node quadratic line-elements for the face layers and numerical integration. The numerical model was programmed in MATIAB-programming environment. The calculated results were compared with the test results. The comparable variables were the deflection of the mid-span of the composite structure and the stresses of the face layers and the core layer as function of the load. Material parameters for the calculations were taken from the material tests. Performed material tests were shear tests for the core layer, tension tests for the face layers and shear tests for the fixings.

Tässä diplomityössä tarkasteltiin sandwich-elementin ja verhouselementin muodostaman liittorakenteen toimintaa kokeellisesti ja laskennallisesti. Koesarja liittyi EU-projektiin Ensuring Advancement in Sandwich Construction through Innovation and Exploitation (EASIE), jossa Aalto-yliopiston Rakenne- ja rakennustuotantotekniikan laitos oli tutkimusosapuolena mukana. Kiinnikkeiden vaikutusta rakenteissa kuvattiin käyttäen yksinkertaista ideaali -kimmoplastista jousimallia. Diplomityöhön liittyvät elementtimenetelmälaskelmat suoritettiin tasojännitystehtävän ratkaisevalla elementtimenetelmäohjelmalla, joka käyttää ydinkerroksille 9-solmuisia bi-kvadraattisia suorakaide-elementtejä ja pintakerroksille 3-solmuisia kvadraattisia janaelementtejä sekä numeerista integrointia. Ohjelma on kehitetty MATLAB-ohjelmointiympäristössä. MATLAB-ohjelmointiympäristössä laskettuja tuloksia verrattiin kokeissa saatuihin tuloksiin. Vertailu koetuloksien ja laskentamallilla laskettujen tuloksien välillä suoritettiin vertailemalla sandwich-elementin taipuman Ja pintakerroksien jännityksien arvoja. Laskentamallin materiaaliparametreina käytettiin koekappaleille tehtyjen materiaalikokeiden, kuten sandwich-elementin leikkauskokeen ja pintakerroksien vetokokeen sekä kiinnikkeiden leikkauskokeen, antamia arvoja.
