Abstract
With growing computing demand, energy consumption is standing out as a salient concern of data centres with large numbers of servers. To build high energy-efficient data centres, the low power consumption ARM processors have been investigated as an alternative solution to replace the conventional high-end server processors e.g. Intel and AMD processors. This study exploits this concept and measures how much energy saving can be achieved by adopting ARM processors. We design four different experiments representing WEB server applications, In-memory database, video transcoding applications and Hadoop to evaluate whether ARM based server is able to provide the same level of service in a more energy-efficient way, and which application is more suitable for ARM based server. Additionally, the lesson learn from this study is discussed in the end of this study.
