Abstract
Cruise ship design has over the last decades been dramatically influenced by a strong demand for high value outside cabins. Currently STX Europe is working on a cruise ship concept called xpTray that has a high and narrow superstructure to maximize the number of outside cabins. However, the longitudinal strength characteristics of the design are not known. Thus, the objective of this thesis is to analyze issues related to the longitudinal strength of the hull girder of the concept ship and in particular to the hull-superstructure interaction. This thesis is one of three interlinked theses dealing with issues related to the concept ship. The theses represent three separate fields; economics, design, and engineering. This technical thesis includes a determination of a weight-optimized structural solution for the hull girder, a sensitivity analysis, an analysis of the superstructure efficiency, and a feasibility evaluation. The general arrangement of the ship was the main interface between this and the other theses. All results were obtained by using a new tool for ship design called ConStruct, which enables structural analysis and structural optimization at the conceptual design phase by utilizing a coupled beam method. A simplified prismatic model of the hull girder of the ship was used for the analysis. Sagging and hogging bending moments were determined according to DNV classification rules. The accuracy of stresses calculated by ConStruct was evaluated by comparing them to reference values obtained by the FE-method. Results indicate that the narrow superstructure contributes significantly to the longitudinal strength. Sensitivity information indicates that the decks and shell plates connecting the hull and the superstructure form a "stairway", through which shear force is transferred from the hull to the superstructure. Transferred loads can he reduced by minimizing the shear stiffness of the elements belonging to the "stairway". Nevertheless, the feasibility of the structure is questionable due to high shear stresses in the lower parts of the superstructure sides. The sensitivity analysis showed that the strength of this problematic area is significantly affected by the plate thickness of several structural parts (the most significant being the superstructure sides, the side shells, and the first deck of the superstructure), dimensions of balcony openings, and the yield strength of the material used for the superstructure sides. It would probably he possible to improve the design by moving the load carrying sides of the superstructure to the inner side of the cabins. This idea should be implemented and evaluated in future works. Evaluation of results indicated that the accuracy of normal stresses in the hull was overestimated with values up to 13.3 % larger than the reference values. The maximum normal stresses at top of the superstructure were on the other hand as much as 60 % below the corresponding reference values. Shear stresses proved to be significantly overestimated while the absolute values were on average 22 - 41 % larger than the reference values. However, additional studies partly explained the large inaccuracy in stresses. The unsatisfactory accuracy of the calculated stresses remains anyway an issue for future work. Issues regarding ultimate strength, vibration, fatigue, transverse and horizontal bending, etc. should also be treated in future works.

Viime vuosikymmenen aikana risteilyalusten kehitykseen on vaikuttanut merkittävästi kasvanut kysyntä ulkohyteistä. Nyt STX Europe on kehittämässä uutta risteilyaluskonseptia nimeltä xpTray, jossa on kapea ja korkea kansirakennus ulkohyttien määrän maksimoimiseksi. Konseptin pitkittäislujuusominaisuuksia ei kuitenkaan vielä tunneta. Työn tavoitteena onkin analysoida aluksen pitkittäislujuuteen ja erityisesti rungon ja kansirakenteen vuorovaikutukseen liittyviä kysymyksiä. Diplomityö on yksi kolmesta toisiinsa liittyvistä opinnäytetöistä, joissa käsitellään teknisiä, taloudellisia ja muotoiluteknisiä kysymyksiä liittyen xpTray konseptiin. Tämä työ sisältää paino-optimoidun rakenneratkaisun määrittämisen runkopalkille, herkkyysanalyysin, kansirakenteen tehokkuusanalyysin, sekä rakenteen toteuttamiskelpoisuuden arvioinnin. Tämän ja kahden muun työn rajapintana toimi laivan yleisjärjestely. Työn tulokset laskettiin käyttäen uutta ConStruct nimistä ohjelmistoa, joka mahdollistaa rakenne- analyysin ja rakenneoptimoinnin konseptisuunnitteluvaiheessa hyödyntäen kytkettyjen palkkien menetelmää. Analyysiä varten käytettiin yksinkertaistettua prismaattista mallia konseptialuksen laivapalkista. Laivapalkkiin vaikuttavat sagging ja hogging momentit määritettiin DNV luokitussääntöjen mukaisesti. ConStruct ohjelmistolla laskettujen jännityksien oikeellisuus arvioitiin vertailemalla niitä FE -menetelmällä laskettuihin referenssiarvoihin. Tulokset osoittavat että rakenteen toteutettavuus on kyseenalainen johtuen erityisesti kansirakenteen sivuissa esiintyvistä korkeista leikkausjännityksistä. Herkkyysanalyysi osoitti että tämän lujuuskriittiseen alueen lujuuteen vaikuttaa merkittävästi useiden rakenneosien levypaksuudet (merkittävimmät olivat ylärakenteen sivut, rungon sivut sekä ylärakenteen ensimmäinen kansi), parvekeaukkojen koko ja kansirakenteen sivujen materiaalin myötälujuus. Herkkyysanalyysi osoitti lisäksi että runkoa ja kansirakennetta yhdistävät pitkittäislaipiot ja niitä yhdistävät kansilevyt muodostavat yhdessä "portaikon", jonka kautta leikkausvoimaa siirtyy rungosta ylärakenteeseen. Ylä- rakenteeseen siirtyvää leikkausvoimaa voidaan vähentää minimoimalla tähän portaikkoon kuuluvien elementtien jäykkyyttä. Kansirakenteen tehokkuusanalyysi osoitti että ylärakenteen vaikutus laivan pitkittäislujuuteen on merkittävä. ConStruct ohjelmistolla laskettujen jännityksien vertailu FEM tuloksiin osoitti että normaalijännityksien tarkkuus olivat rungon osalta hyvin konservatiiviset. Pääkannessa normaalijännitykset olivat suurimmillaan 13 % suuremmat kuin vastaavat referenssiarvot. Maksiminormaalijännitykset ylärakenteen osalta olivat toisaalta jopa 60 % pienemmät kuin vastaavat referenssiarvot. Leikkausjännitykset olivat yliarvioidut ollen keskimäärin 22 - 41 % suuremmat kuin referenssiarvot. Vaikka jännityseroavuudet pystyttiin osittain selittämään lisätarkasteluissa, tämä on tärkeä jatkotutkimusaihe. Lisäksi tulee analysoida esimerkiksi laivapalkin äärilujuutta, värähtelyjä ja väsymislujuutta. Mielenkiintoista olisi tutkia myös uutta rakenneratkaisua, jossa kansirakenteen kuormaa kantavat ulkolaidoitukset on siirretty hyttimoduulien sisäpuolelle. Tällöin voidaan pienentää kantavassa rakenteessa esiintyvien aukkojen kokoa ja saavuttaa parempi toteutuskelpoisuus.
