Abstract
Large coal furnaces are pulverized coal fired, where coal is pulverized prior to burning. The burning is concentrated in the flames close to the coal burners. To comply with emission standards the coal flame must he well controlled which is done by controlling the flow of burning air into the flame. Pulverized coal burner uses a stabling ring to stabilize an intensive flame at the mouth of the burner. Intensive flame with controlled air flow can reduce significantly the amount of nitrogen oxide in the flue gas. In this thesis the behaviour of the pulverized coal burner stabilizing ring was analyzed and an attempt was made to identify the areas most susceptible to failure. The temperature distribution of the structure under normal operational conditions was calculated from data extracted from simulation done by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The calculated temperature distribution was used as loading for structural analysis. The finite element method was used for the thermal and structural analyses of this thesis. The geometry of the analyzed structure was obtained as a three dimensional model, which was meshed for use in the calculations. Critical areas found in the results of the analyses matched the locations of the material failures that have occurred during use of the stabilizing ring. Due to insufficient material data and the lack of measured temperature distribution data more detailed study was not possible. The finite element method is useful tool for the development of the pulverized coal burner stabilizing ring because it can he used to identify critical areas of the structure.

Suurissa hiilivoimaloissa käytetään pölypolttoa, jossa hiili jauhetaan ennen polttoa. Palaminen tapahtuu pääasiassa hiilipölypolttimen suulla. Päästönormien alittaminen vaatii syntyvän liekin hyvää hallintaa, mikä onnistuu palamisilmoja ohjaamalla. Hiilipölypolttimessa käytetään stabilointirengasta, jonka tehtävä on stabiloida intensiivinen liekki polttimen suulle. Valtion Teknillisen Tutkimuskeskuksen suorittamista laskelmista saatiin arvot, joilla pystyttiin laskennallisesti mallintamaan rakenteen lämpöjakaumaa käyttöolosuhteissa.
