Abstract
Piirrän Hulluussarjakuvia-blogiini lukijoideni mielen ongelmista kertovia tositarinoita nettisarjakuviksi. Opinnäytteessäni tutkin, miten blogi kuvaa ja luo mahdollisuuksia purkaa hulluusstigmaa, hulluihin ihmisiin kohdistuvaa häpeäleimaa. Haluan kehittää blogia ja työskentelyäni yhteiskunnalliseen ongelmaan puuttuen ja tabuaihetta eettisesti käsitellen. Hulluus on osa omaa identiteettiäni ja tätä tutkielmaa, jossa tarkastelen blogityöskentelyäni taideperustaisesti. Haluan vaikuttaa tapaan jolla hullut –meidät – nähdään. Kuvaan hulluuden ihmisyyteen kuuluvaksi, yksilölliseksi kokemukseksi ja yhteisölliseksi, medikalisoituneeksi ilmiöksi. Näkökulmalleni on tärkeää säilyttää hullun elämän kokemukselliset laadut, jotka joskus karsiutuvat mielenterveyttä korostavasta julkisesta keskustelusta. Aineisto koostuu blogimateriaalista (sarjakuvat, visuaalinen ilme, tekstit, keskustelut), jota tutkittiin lähilukemalla ja teemoittelemalla. Analyysi rinnastaa sarjakuvanäytteet ja aineistohavainnot. Tuloksissa hulluusstigma representoituu blogissa haitallisena ilmiönä, joka vaientaa, sulkee ulos ja pilkkaa hulluiksi leimattuja. Stigmatisoiduimpien hulluuksien käsittely mahdollistaa tärkeiden ilmiöiden esilletuonnin, mutta vaatii vastuullista perehtymistä. Blogialusta luo mahdollisuuksia stigmanpurkuun.

My “Comics about Madness”-blog depicts its readers’ true stories of their mental problems. This study answers two questions: firstly, how does the blog represent the stigma of madness, the discrimination of the people who are labelled “crazy”? Secondly, what kind of opportunities for reducing that stigma does the blog offer? I wish to develop my ethics in representing madness and its stigma and the blog’s pedagogical, social potential. Madness is a part of my identity, art and an important element in this art-based study. I define madness as a human quality, a subjective experience and a social, medicalized construction. It is crucial for this study to preserve the lived experiences of mad people that sometimes are left out from the discussion that focuses on mental health. The research material consists of the comics, layout, text and comments published in the blog platform and was studied with close reading and thematic analysis. The research has shown that the stigma of madness is represented in the blog as a harmful phenomena that silences and discriminates people that are labeled “crazy”. In order to educate the readers about the most stigmatized forms of madness, delicate taboo subjects such as suicide must be carefully examined before publishing each comic. The second major finding was that the blog platform creates possibilities to reduce the stigma. The stigma or stigmatizing attitudes could be reduced when the reader “gets to know” the mad narrator, who is shown as an individual through comic narrative rather than a stigmatized stereotype. The narrator might evoke feelings of empathy, caring, hopefulness and other anti-stigmatizing affects in the reader. The blog community might be able to help the readers who have internalized the stigma and energize them to fight back the stigma personally and socially. The reader could be assisted to apply the anti-stigma principles into their behavior through educational comics. It was also found that the web-based dialogue between the blogger and the readers plays a role in the blog’s anti-stigma goal: as an administrator, I have to encourage the conversations reciprocity, polyphony and reflectiveness. This study might engage a reader that is interested in madness, the stigma of madness and the ethics of representing the aforementioned; issue-based, socially aware comics; comics blogging or defending a stigmatized group through art education.
