Abstract
Inside/Outside/In is my Master’s Thesis for Master of Arts: Visual Culture and Contemporary Art. It is a collection of selected artwork and related ideas created and mused over during my master’s studies at Aalto University. This collection is bound together by my long held interest in the dialogue between the inner and the outer, the fine line that seprates the two and the exchanges and influence that crosses over, especially when pertaining to the human experience, The overarching theme is the relationship humans have with their environment and how our physical world influences our interior selves. In the following pages, in the form of artwork and text, I touch upon this theme in several different ways. First, my ceramic exhibition Inner Space (Poriginal Galleria) inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s book The Poetics of Space looks at how our homes are first experienced, and how our first memories are intrinsically tied with the objects found within. Then more broadly the essence of human nature is questioned as well as the personal impact of landscape and nature in the video work Immersion Absorption and Other Seaworthy Homonyms (Seinäjoen Taidehalli) and Closer to (My) Nature (Galleria Katariina). These video works were greatly inspired by the environs they were filmed in; the Finnish Archipelago and the Icelandic Coast. Lastly, with the help of Jean-Paul Sartre and some anonymous passages from the Internet the photo series Do You Ever Get the Urge? delves more deeply into how nature can influence you psychologically. My thesis supervisor is Pia Euro.
