Abstract
Suunnitelman pääpainopiste on vanhaan historialliseen ympäristöön istuvan uuden arkkitehtuurin tavoittaminen eläytymällä alueen erityispiirteisiin. Asuntosuunnittelussa esitetään muuntojoustavuuden kautta vastaus tilanteeseen, jossa pienen asuinrakennuskannan sisällä on haasteita löytää oikeanlaajuisia asuntoja muuttuville perhekoille.

Suomenlinna was founded during the Swedish rule in Finland in the mid-1700s, when it was decided to undertake the building of a fortress with a naval base, purposed as a defense against Russia. With the continuous construction work requiring labor force, the group of islands turned into a small city with different kinds of functions. Nowadays, the only active remnant of the military use is the naval school, and culture or recreational travelling purposes have come in place activating the area mostly during summer time. There are around 800 inhabitants, who are mainly workers in the local travelling and renovation occupations. Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized as an exceptionally consistent historical entity, and is maintained and developed by the Governing Body of Suomenlinna. An architecture competition ”Suomenlinnan Länsi-Mustasaaren täydennysrakentamisen arkkitehtuurikilpailu” was organized 27.5.2016-3.10.10.2016. There are constantly more applicants than there are available apartments for rent, but new construction needs to be implemented carefully so that historical values won’t be lost. The mission of the competition, arranged by the Governing Body of Suomenlinna, was to design new housing buildings befitting the surroundings on the Island Länsi-Mustasaari in the place of the to-be demolished temporary buildings. This thesis presents a design proposal according to the competition brief. The presentation consists of a written analysis explaining the design solutions, followed by the design drawings. Alongside the material requested in the competition, complementary studies of further precision are included through additional drawings, visualizations and diagram material. The main focus of the proposal is in reaching a new architectural design befitting the old historical surroundings by focusing specifically on the unique features of the area. The housing design offers a flexible solution to the problem of finding the right size apartment inside the small housing stock, when there are changes in family size.
