Abstract
Tätä ohjelmaa olen toteuttanut puolen vuoden ajan. Tutkimusmetodi jakautuu kahteen osaan. Tosi illuusio -essee pohtii näkyvän todellisuuden esittämisen konventiota ja kysyy millainen on realistinen kuva: riittääkö kuva näkyvästä maailmasta kuvaamaan ihmisen kokemusta maailmasta? Tutkin esseessä ranskalaisen maalaustaiteen realismin ja valokuvan dokumentarismin suhdetta sekä erilaisia realismeja, erityisesti kirjallisuuden maagista realismia ja pohdin mitä maaginen realismi valokuvan kohdalla tarkoittaa. Päädyn esittämään, että realistinen kuva on ristiriitainen, niin kuin ihmisen kokemus maailmasta, ja tämän ajatuksen tuominen näkyväksi kuvaesitykseen vaatii kuvaan illuusion tason, toisin sanoen jotain mitä tuodaan kuvaan silmillä nähtävän todellisuuden rinnalle. Käveleminen-essee on matka syrjäseuduille, omien taiteellisten innoitusteni lähteille. 1800-luvun ajattelijan Henry David Thoreaun kirja Kävelemisen taito toimii esseen pääasiallisena keskustelukumppanina. Esseen näkökulma on humanistisen maantieteilijän. Art and Sport in Contemporary Culture, Teemu Mäen kuvataiteen tohtorin väitökseen kuulunutta esseekokoelmaa Näkyvä pimeys, Harri Pälvirannan väitöskirjaa Todentuntua galleriassa: Väkivaltaa käsittelevän dokumentaarisen valokuvataiteen merkityksellistäminen näyttelykontekstissa sekä Roland Barthesin kirjaa Valoisa huone – La chambre claire – Camera Lucida. Opinnäytetyö päättyy näyttelydokumentaatioon sekä kirjeeseen Kalervo Palsalle, Vincent van Goghille ja Henry David Thoreaulle.

The Master Thesis 180 degrees/kilos/days: Ponderings on art and sport, documentarism and periphery is an artistic research that is based on crisscrossing of art and sport. The starting point of the research is a method of artistic practice, a training program for creative work that I had developed for myself. I borrowed the idea of muscle groups ( feet, torso, hands ) from bodybuilding and changed the names of bodyparts into painting, photography ( containing photographs and moving image ) and music. I followed this program of mine for half a year. The research method is divided into two parts. The first part is a 180 days´ training period. There I see myself as an artistic bodybuilder who trains and exercises artistic working according to the method and also keeps an exercise diary. After the training period I explored the theoretical material that I discuss in connection with my diary observations and notes. This is the second part. The Master Thesis consists of a theoretical part and an artistic part. The artistic part is made of photographs and video works. I present as an artistic part a documentation of three exhibitions. The exhibitions are Marttikerho - Man cave, group exhibition at Turku Photographic Center Peri ( 8.1.-31.1.2016 ), Sudenkorento-Dragonfly, solo exhibition at Lemi Vanha Pappila (Old Vicarage) (4.-29.9.2017) and Solar, solo exhibition at Tampere Photographic Center Nykyaika ( Modern Times ) 6.1.-29.1. 2018. The Master Thesis contains also an Exercise Diary part with notes that I wrote down during the training period. The notes act as the source material of the research and also as the description of the artistic process. On the diary pages I also present visual notes, in other words paintings, still-life pictures from the videos and photographs. The theoretical part contains three essays, the themes of which have arisen from the exercise diary notes working as the source research material. The essay called Artist-Sportsman is pondering on the line where art and sport meet and through them on the meaning of body in art making. I also adapt the mental training known from sports to the use of an artist and I change sports psychology into art making psychology in my essay. The essay called Real Illusion is pondering over conventions of representing the reality to be seen and asks what the realistic picture is like: Is the picture that shows the reality that can be seen by eyes enough to describe the human expe-rience of the world? The essay is a study of the relationship between the French realism found in French painting art and the documentarism of the photography. In the essay I also study different realisms, especially magical realism in literature and consider what magical realism in photography might mean. My conclusion is that a realistic picture is contradictory such as human experience of the world is, and to bring this idea to be seen in the picture representation demands that in the picture there is also a level of illusion, in other words side by side the reality to be seen there is a presence of something else in the picture. The essay called Walking is a trip to periphery, to the sources of my own artistic inspirations. The main discussion company in the essay is Henry David Thoreau´s book The Art of Walking from the 19th century. The point of view in the essay is one of a humanistic geographer. I discuss the meaning of place and environment in my artistic working. I also study esoteric geography, periphery therapy, the dicotomy between center-periphery and think about what could be center and periphery in art world. In the end I crystallize my model of artistic practice. In the essays I present artists that have approached the theme of the essays in their works of art. The main theoretical sources of the essays have been Matti Tainio´s doctoral thesis Parallel worlds. Art and sport in contemporary culture, the essay collection Darkness Visible: Essays on Art, Philosophy and Politics from Teemu Mäki´s doctoral thesis, Harri Pälviranta´s doctoral thesis Experiencing reality in an art exhibition. Encountering violence-related documentary photographic art in a gallery contex and Roland Barthes´s book Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography. The Master Thesis ends with an exhibition documentation and a letter to Kalervo Palsa, Vincent van Gogh and Henry David Thoreau.
