Abstract
Sillan kansilaatan korjaukseen liittyy usein huonokuntoisen betonin poistamista kannen yläpinnasta. Tuloksista selvitettiin tartuntalujuuden muutosta betonipeitteen paksuuden suhteen.

The repair process of a bridge deck often includes the removal of low quality concrete from the upper surface of the deck. Sometimes the concrete is removed in such an extent that it reveals the reinforcing bars partly or entirely in the upper surface. When calculating the capacity of the structure it has been common practice to ignore reinforcement in the area where concrete cover has been removed. The view is conservative and impractical and often leads to the overly massive supporting of the structure during the repair process. The behaviour of the reinforcement with thinning concrete cover was investigated in this study. The change in the bond between the reinforcement bar and surrounding concrete rose as a key issue. The matter was studied by a literature review and a model based on finite element method was created of an example case with which the bond strength between the bar and concrete was studied computationally with different amounts of concrete cover removal. The results were used to examine the change in bond strength with respect to the depth of concrete cover. There is no widely acknowledged view regarding the connection between bond strength and the depth of concrete cover in literature. In this study the results from the tests modelled with finite element method predict that theoretically the bond strength decreases only after the concrete cover has thinned to the level of the upper surface of the reinforcement if the exposed area is surrounded by concrete in all other directions. The results of the finite element method must be verified by empirical tests before creating a new design guide.
