Abstract

During this century, the amount of road tunnels has been steadily increasing in Finland; however, there is a lack of knowledge about the fire protection methods implemented in road tunnels. This thesis evaluates the possible structure types and the factors that contribute to the choice of fire protection method. The research question is examined via a study of the current literature, interviews and thermal modeling. The literature study focused on the structural and fire engineering characteristics of a road tunnel; in addition, the most common materials used in road tunnels are presented as well as their properties at high temperatures. Finnish and international legislation as well as design methods were also assessed related to road tunnel fire protection methods. Over-dimensioning of a structure and thermal barriers are the most common fire protection methods in road tunnels. Thermal barriers include sprayed coatings, fire protection boards and intumescent paints. Adding micro polymer fibers to concrete is a way to reduce explosive spalling of concrete but it is not considered a structural fire protection method. The choice of a structural fire protection method is affected by, for example, the thermal properties of the fire protection products, the procurement method of the project, the demands of the client, the shape and type of the tunnel, the fixing type of the fire protection system and factors related to the installation and maintaining of the fire protection structure. Moreover, the costs related to a certain fire protection method affect the opinions of the tunnel project participants at all stages of the design process. A perfect structural fire protection method for every situation was not found during the research due to the number of factors related to the choice and performance of the structural fire protection method. However, the use of thermal barriers is encouraged to prevent extensive thermal damage to the road tunnel structure. The effect of structural fire protection and its details were examined via thermal modeling. The heating of concrete structures was compared without fire protection and with 30 mm of calcium-silicate on the fire exposed side. In the fire protected case, special attention was awarded to a 10 mm wide steel anchor penetrating the fire protection layer. The bottom sides of the structures were exposed to air which heated up following the HCM fire curve for three hours. The temperature of the unprotected concrete structure at a depth of 50 mm rose to over 600 °C causing severe damage to the microstructure of the concrete. The fire protection layer slowed down the heating of the concrete structure and the temperature of the concrete surface remained under 300 °C, which does not cause severe damage to the microstructure of the concrete. The anchor slightly affected the heating of the concrete structure in the early stages of the heating period, but the thermal bridge caused by the anchor did not cause significant risk of explosive spalling of the concrete.
