Abstract
Distribution system operators are moving towards a weatherproof electricity network and underground cabling will increase in distribution network in the near future. Underground cables generate a significant amount of capacitive reactive power. The increased reactive power output and changes in the requirements concerning reactive power supply from the main grid will cause technical and economical challenges for distribution system operators. The purpose of this thesis is to inspect different options for reactive power management in Caruna’s distribution network. The aim is to define the most viable methods for capacitive reactive power compensation, and the main focus is to examine devices for centralized compensation. In addition, the present and future reactive power compensation needs in the network are analysed in this thesis. The technically suitable solutions are defined according to the required reactive power compensation in the network. In addition, viability of the proposed devices is defined based on techno-economic analyses. In the results, this thesis determines the most viable compensation devices and defines reactive power compensation strategy for the network. Required compensation will vary in the network between 0–25 Mvar. Depending on connection points and exceedings of reactive power limits, the compensation is reasonable to implement either on the 20 kV or 110 kV voltage level by shunt reactors. In the future, shunt reactors are required in approximately 40 connection points, in order to lower reactive power fees of the network to a more reasonable level in an economically viable way. Reactive power balance of the network is to be inspected and compensation strategy updated as cabling proceeds further in the network.

Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on selvittää erilaisia vaihtoehtoja loistehon hallintaan Carunan jakeluverkossa. Tavoitteena on määrittää kannattavimmat tavat kapasitiivisen loistehon kompensointiin ja pääpaino on keskitettyyn kompensointiin soveltuvien laitteiden tarkastelussa. Lisäksi työssä tarkastellaan verkon nykyisiä ja tulevia loistehon kompensointitarpeita. Teknisesti sopivimmat laitteet määritellään verkon kompensointitarpeiden mukaisesti. Lisäksi ehdotettujen laitteiden kannattavuutta tarkastellaan teknistaloudellisten analyysien avulla. Työn tuloksissa selvitetään kannattavimmat kompensointilaitteet sekä määritellään loistehon kompensointistrategia. Kompensointitarpeet tulevat vaihtelemaan verkossa 0–25 Mvar:n välillä. Liityntäpisteestä ja loistehorajojen ylityksistä riippuen kompensointi on järkevää toteuttaa joko 20 kV:n tai 110 kV:n jännitetasossa rinnakkaisreaktoreilla. Tulevaisuudessa reaktoreita tarvitaan arviolta noin 40 liityntäpisteessä, mikäli verkon loistehomaksut on tarkoitus laskea kohtuullisemmalle tasolle kannattavasti. Verkon loistehotasetta tulee tarkastella ja kompensointi strategiaa päivittää verkon kaapelointien edetessä.
