Abstract
The development of automatic segmentation algorithms for magnetic resonance imaging is hindered by the fact that the image quality varies between hospitals and even more between different imaging sequence types. By selecting a sequence specifically designed for auto-segmentation, twofold benefits might be achieved. As the image data would be consistent it might be easier to train an auto-segmentation to find relevant structures in the image data. Additionally if the imaging sequence contrasts are designed for machine view instead of human observation it might assist the segmentation even more. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a T2-weighted sequence to be used in conjunction with a T1-weighted sequence for auto-segmentation of relevant pelvic organs for prostate cancer radiation therapy planning. This way the image quality should be more standardised between sites allowing more accurate automatic segmentations. The developed sequence was compared with a Philips T2-weighted sequence used for diagnostic purposes. Secondary purpose of this thesis was to develop a metric to measure the suitability of image data for auto-segmentation purposes before the algorithm itself is available. The developed sequence had smaller voxel size in the through-plane direction, which leads to a better resolution at the prostate base and apex, when compared to the baseline T2-weighted sequence. The developed sequence was also less noisy and shorter in duration. The cost of these improvements was a significantly reduced field-of-view in left-right direction. The developed metric showed a strong indication that images with greater gradients at the edge of the structure to be delineated have smaller median and maximum error between auto and ground truth segmentations.
