Abstract
Jarrutusenergian kertymisen tehokkuus pienenee huomattavasti jarrutuksen tapahtuessa alle 25 km/h nopeudesta.

The metro and tram networks of Helsinki are going to expand significantly by the year 2025. With growing network and increasing number of trams and metro trains the energy consumption is going to grow as well, and thus this a good time to reinvestigate the possibilities for using braking energy. This study was made for Helsinki City Transport (HCT) and the aim was to examine the current situation of using the braking energy in HCT’s systems and explore the future possibilities. In HCT’s tram and metro systems, braking energy is already used to some extent. In most cases the braking energy is transformed in the brake resistors as heat. This heat is then used to warm the passenger cabin of the train if needed. The two newest tram types can feed the braking energy back to the feeding network, but only if there is another tram accelerating at the same time. In reality this is highly unlikely as the feeding network has been divided into many smaller parts. In this study, the actual braking energy of the MLNRV I tram type was estimated using current measurements. The phase of the control plate was also measured to quantify the amount of heat used to warm the passenger cabin. Based on the measurements the reusable energy content was 26 % of the energy the tram uses. The recuperation energy is reduced significantly when the tram brakes from a speed lower than 25 km/h. The results also showed that the heating system operation is not optimal and thus it needs to be optimized. Different types of energy storages are shortly introduced in this study and a simple feasibility analysis is also included. The best energy storage types for tram and metro systems are the supercapasitor and the flywheel. The conclusion based on the feasibility analysis is that the energy storages are not yet a profitable and viable option.
