Abstract
In this diploma thesis, the emulsification and stabilization of maleated high oleic sunflower oil (MSOHO) used as a hydrophobizing agent was studied. MSOHO is a biobased alternative for alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA), which is traditionally used in the paper industry as a hydrophobizing agent. In paper industry processes, MSOHO is emulsified in water, like ASA. In this study, MSOHO was emulsified in water with a small molecular weight surfactant and anionic, cationic, non-ionic and amphiphilic biopolymers were used as additives. Traditionally, cationic starch is used for stabilizing ASA; therefore, it was expected that cationic starch would also stabilize MSOHO to some extent. A problem with ASA and MSOHO is rapid hydrolysis in water and strong decrease in hydrophobicity properties after hydrolysis. Therefore, finding better solutions to prevent the hydrolysis would be desirable, so that the chemicals remain usable longer in industrial processes in aqueous environments. The emulsions were analysed with multiple methods and the best emulsions were used for surface sizing experiments. The sizing performance of different samples was compared to reference sample with only MSOHO, water and surfactant. A general observation was that the pH of the emulsions decreased faster at 70°C storage temperature than at 40°C which indicates more rapid hydrolysis in higher temperature. It was found that a small median particle size value (<2 µm) indicated better surface sizing results compared to reference sample without added biopolymer. Also, it was observed that the biopolymer ratio did affect to median particle size of emulsions. Overall, the cationic biopolymers performed well with the emulsifier used in these tests. First, those emulsions were visually stable and additionally the surface sizing water absorbency results were initially better than with reference sample. Also, an amphiphilic starch was able to stabilize the emulsions and it had the best surface sizing performance from all the studied emulsion samples after 2 h storage time in 60°C. Anionic biopolymers did not perform as well in surface sizing tests.

MSOHO on biopohjainen vaihtoehto alkenyylimeripihkahappoanhydridille (ASA), jota käytetään perinteisesti paperiteollisuudessa hydrofoboivana aineena. Paperiteollisuuden prosesseissa MSOHO emulgoidaan veteen, kuten ASA.
