Abstract

The objective of this master’s thesis was to study the effect of enzymatic and acid hydrolysis together with hot-alkali treatment on kraft fiber swelling and thus to verify or, alternatively, to disprove the presumed benefits of the treatments for swelling of the fiber. The literature part concentrated on the fiber structure and the methods to alter it. Enzyme and acid hydrolysis were divided into pre and post experiments. The pre experiments were used as approximate tests for the actual post experiments. For the hot-alkali treatments only the actual experimentswere carried out. The pre experiment samples were analyzed by alkali water retention value (AWRV) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. The post experiment samples were analyzed in addition to the above-mentioned measures for the water retention value (WRV) and viscosity analyses. In addition, the degree of polymerization (DP) and the yield loss were determined for the post experiment samples. Enzyme treatments other than cellulase achieved no considerable change in the AWRV nor the SEM images. This was seen as an evidence for the failure of the treatment. With the cellulase treatment, AWRV and WRV values increased. No significant improvement in the water retention values was achieved by increasing the celluase dosages. SEM images showed that even low dosages led to structural changes in the fibers and the fibers treated by larger dosages appeared to be suffered and broken. Cellulase treatment lowered the viscosity values substantially. Acid hydrolysis pre experiments decreased the AWRV. This was suggested to be due to the high-temperature induced hornification. Temperature was reduced and the portion of the acids was increased in the post experiments. This led to almost unchanged AWRV and WRV values, which indicaded reduction of hornification. According to the SEM images post experiments appeared to affect much less the appearance of the fiber compared to the pre experiments. There were no significant changes in viscosities of the post experiments with the exception of 2M sulfuric acid treatment. As for this sample, the viscosity decreased to a level comparable to dissolving pulp. The decreasing AWRV and WRV results of hot-alkali treatment indicated that the water reten-tion capacity of the treated pulps did not increase, but rather hornification was observed. However, enlarged pores could have distorted the results. Hot-alkali treatment had no significant effect on the viscosity.
