Abstract
Tämä diplomityö käsittelee Turun Artukaisissa sijaitsevan monitoimihallin, Turkuhallin erilaisia uusiokäyttömahdollisuuksia sekä rakennuksen muuntamista ilmailumuseoksi. Diplomityön laadintahetkellä rakennuksen virallinen nimi on sponsorinsa mukaan ”Gatorade Center”, mutta useista rakennuksen nimimuutoksista johtuen rakennuksesta käytetään sen yleisesti tunnettua nimeä ”Turkuhalli”. Työn taustalla on Turun ratapihalle suunnitteilla oleva uusi monitoimiareenahanke, jonka myötä tämän suhteellisen uuden, vuonna 1990 valmistuneen Turkuhallin uusiokäyttö tulee ajankohtaiseksi. Diplomityö on laadittu itsenäisenä tutkielmana, ja sen tavoitteena on kartoittaa monipuolisesti Turkuhallin urheilukäytöstä poikkeavia uusiokäyttömahdollisuuksia konseptitasolla. Pyrkimyksenä on myös ympäröivän alueen kehittäminen ja elävöittäminen. Turkuhalli on uusiokäyttökohteeksi suhteellisen nuori iältään, ja diplomityön päämääränä on myös arvottaa rakennuksen eri osia sekä hyödyntää niitä uudessa käyttötarkoituksessa, ottaen huomioon myös kestävän kehityksen periaatteet. Tutkimusmetodeina työssä on käytetty kirjallisuuskatsauksia, kohdekäyntiä, Turkuhallin rakennuspiirustusten analysointia sekä haastatteluja. Analyysi- ja suunnittelumetodina on myös hyödynnetty käsivaraluonnostelua, keskeisten rakennuksen ominaisuuksien havainnoimiseksi sekä konseptisuunnitelmien esittämiseksi. Diplomityö koostuu viidestä osasta. Ensimmäisessä osiossa esitellään työn taustat ja käsitellään urheilurakentamisen historiaa, tavoitteena luoda parempi käsitys siitä, miten nykyaikaisiin monitoimiareenoihin on päädytty ja miksi juuri Turkuhallin uusiokäyttö on tullut ajankohtaiseksi. Taustaosuuden jälkeen analyysiosiossa käsitellään kohdealueen ja Turkuhallin historiaa, alueen tulevaisuudennäkymiä sekä tarkastellaan ympäristön ja kohderakennuksen nykytilannetta. Kolmannessa osiossa käydään läpi viisi luonnosmaista konseptisuunnitelmaa Turkuhallin ja sen ympäristön uusiokäytöstä. Nämä on esitetty kaaviomaisina käsivaraluonnoksina, ja yksi konsepteista on valittu tarkempaan suunnitteluun. Suunnitelman pohjaksi valittu konseptisuunnitelma muuntaa Turkuhallin ilmailumuseoksi, joka esitellään diplomityön neljännessä osiossa. Valinnan perusteina ovat Artukaisten alueen historia vanhana lentokenttänä, kuin myös uuden ilmailumuseon ajankohtaisuus aiheena. Diplomityön laadintahetkellä Suomen Ilmailumuseolle ollaan etsimässä uusia tiloja, jotka on jo päätetty sijoitettaviksi Vantaalle. Suunnitelman tavoitteena on kuitenkin luoda realistinen mutta hypoteettinen ehdotus nykyajan elämyksellisestä ilmailumuseosta, joka myös ottaa rakennuksen paikan ja historian osaksi museokokemusta. Viidennessä osiossa summataan työn tulokset sekä käsitellään tekijän henkilökohtaista tutkimus- ja suunnitteluprosessia. Diplomityö toimii Turkuhallin, kuin myös muiden samankaltaisten monitoimirakennusten uusiokäytön monipuolisten mahdollisuuksien kartoittajana, sekä ylipäänsä uusiokäytön puolestapuhujana tilanteisiin, joissa kohderakennuksen yhtenä vaihtoehtona on sen kokonaan purkaminen.This thesis addresses different possibilities for adaptive reuse of Turkuhalli, a multipurpose hall located in Turku, Artukainen, and also proposes altering it as an aviation museum. At the time of writing, the official name of this building is “Gatored center” after its sponsor. The building was completed in 1990, and its official name has changed several times since then. Thus, this thesis uses its commonly known name “Turkuhalli”. The reason behind the need for reuse of this relatively young building is an ongoing project for a new multipurpose arena located in Turku railway yard. This thesis has been created as an independent study to present different possibilities for the reuse of Turkuhalli, focusing to find conceptual alternatives, other than use for sports. The aim is also to liven up the surrounding area. Turkuhalli is a relatively new building for a reuse project, and the work pursues to value different parts of the building and to apply them in the new use. The principles of sustainable built environment are also taken into account. The research methods used in this thesis are literature review, site visit, architectural drawings and interviews. In addition, sketching is used as a tool for research and design to identify essential characteristics of the building, and to present the conceptual plans for reuse. Thesis consists of five parts. In the first, the background of the work is introduced, covering also the history of sports facilities in Finland. The aim is to get better understanding of the factors that lead to the present state of the modern multipurpose arenas and why reuse of Turkuhalli is a current issue. The second part of the work analyzes the history of the target area and Turkuhalli, the future plans for the area and examines the current state of the surroundings and the building itself. The third part holds five different concept plans for the reuse of Turkuhalli and the target area, which are presented as sketches. One of the concepts, an aviation museum, has been chosen for more detailed plan in the fourth part of the thesis. The Artukainen area is a former airfield, and at the time of writing, the Finnish Aviation Museum is also looking for new facilities for its collections. This makes the museum a current topic for reuse, even though it has already been decided to be located somewhere in the city of Vantaa. Nevertheless, the goal for the reuse plan is to create a realistic but hypothetical proposal for a modern and memorable aviation museum, which also takes the place and its history as a part of the experience. The fifth and final part of the thesis summarizes the results and goes through the authors research and design process. The thesis establishes different reuse possibilities for Turkuhalli, as well as other similar multipurpose buildings. It also advocates for reuse of buildings in general, when the other possibility is demolition.Description
