Abstract
In this thesis I analyse how are Aalto University master’s programme film students’ occupational health and safety looked after by the university during their studies. Film students study their craft in the same or in very similar conditions to the workers working within the film industry. Employee’s rights to occupational safety and health are protected by the Finnish Occupational Safety and Health Act and so are students’ rights. Though, based on my field notes, there is a concern on how Aalto University is looking after students’ occupational safety and health. The literature review explains through documentary analysis what positive safety culture is and analyses the film industry’ situation concerning occupational safety and health. The thesis analysis is based on the materials I have received through the ‘Wellbeing at Work’ course which teaches students Finnish occupational safety laws. I analyse my study observations at Aalto University through my master’s film projects in relation to the university’s occupational safety and health system. Additionally, I have included my bachelor’s degree knowledge at Arts University Bournemouth relating to the management and training of students on occupational safety and health as a comparison. The key findings from the thesis are that Aalto University does not have an efficient occupational safety and health system and management for its students. The course ‘Wellbeing at Work’ teaches students briefly what is occupational safety and health act in Finland but there is no further studies or practice of the law or training of safety culture beyond that course. There is no available data on film students’ health and safety conditions at Aalto University as no information was available through the Learning Centre. That raises a concern, as having no data means there is no information to comprehend what is the actual situation. Occupational safety and health are rights for students granted by the Finnish Occupational Safety and Health Act, and it should be looked after by the university. This thesis proposes that there should be further research into how to proficiently train film students on occupational health and safety at Aalto University. In addition, this study suggests there should be more research done into what kind of occupational safety and health policy and system is needed to ensure students a sustainable positive safety culture at Aalto University.Description
