dc.description.abstract | The main purpose of this thesis work was to investigate the phosphorus compounds in crude tall oil. The major phosphorus compounds existing in wood are phospholipids and nucleotides. Under alkaline conditions as kraft cooking and oxygen delignification, phospholipids lose two fatty acids chains, resulting in glycerophosphate structure with or without the organic ester head. Ribose-based nucleotides can be partially hydrolyzed when subjected to alkaline condition due to an intramolecular attack on phosphate by an adjacent hydroxyl group. However, deoxyribose-based nucleotides are designed to be much more stable in nature. Therefore, glycerophosphate and possibly fragments from nucleotides should exist in CTO samples. In this thesis, however, GC-FPD and GC-MS were only able to confirm the presence of inorganic phosphate in CTO samples. When selectively scanning ion m/z 299 in GC-MS, there was appearance of few unidentified peaks, which requires further research. The biggest challenge in this thesis was the low content of phosphorous in CTO. Selective ion detection with GC-MS proved to be more sensitive for phosphate than GC-FPD. In addition, GC-MS may enable direct analysis of the chemical structure depending on possible overlaps with other compounds. In future, solvent - solvent extraction could be applied to separate the more and less polar phosphorous compounds from each other. | en |
