Abstract

This thesis explores the role of productization in attaining scalability within consulting services. As knowledge-intensive business services, consulting companies face unique challenges in scaling their operations due to the highly customized nature of their offerings and the reliance on human expertise. In response, productization, defined as the process of standardizing and systematizing services to create repeatable and tangible products, offers a potential solution to these challenges. The empirical part of the study employs a qualitative research methodology, utilizing semi-structured interviews with consultants from various management consulting companies. The data analysis identifies key themes related to the current state of productization, its benefits, challenges, and best practices within the consulting industry. Findings indicate that while productization can significantly enhance efficiency, profitability, and internal clarity, it also poses challenges such as maintaining the balance between standardization and customization and overcoming resistance to change. The study concludes that by integrating insights from various frameworks, consulting companies can develop a balanced approach to productization that supports sustainable growth and competitive advantage. Overall, this thesis contributes to the academic literature by addressing a gap in understanding the scalability of consulting services through productization and offers actionable insights for consulting companies aiming to enhance their scalability.
