Abstract
Tämä taiteen maisterin opinnäytetyö kartoittaa taide- ja suunnittelualoille pyrkivien hakijoiden ajatuksia, haaveita ja motiiveja jotka ovat johtaneet päätökseen hakea mainituille aloille. Opinnäytteen aihe valikoitui henkilökohtaisen kiinnostuksen perusteella, opetan alalle hakeutuvien valmennuskursseilla ja heidän tilanteensa syvempi ymmärtäminen motivoi minut opinnäytteen aiheen pariin. Näiden alojen opiskelupaikkoja on rajattu määrä suhteessa hakijoihin ja kilpailu on kovaa, joten moni hakija ottaa valmennuskurssin avukseen. Opinnäyte pohtii myös valmennuskurssien merkitystä ja kritiikkiä taide- ja suunnittelualojen kontekstissa ja kysyy myös, miten valmennuskurssi on vaikuttanut hakijoiden käsityksiin suhteessa urahaaveisiin. Tutkielman aineisto kerättiin taidealojen valmennuskurssilla opiskeleville henkilöille lähetetyn verkkokyselyn avulla. Aineisto käsiteltiin laadullisen tutkimuksen sisällönanalyysin keinoin kirjallisen lähdemateriaalin tuella. Lähdemateriaali ja tutkielman teoreettinen viitekehys rakentui aineiston analyysivaiheen kanssa samanaikaisesti, pohjautuen aineistosta nousseisiin keskeisiin havaintoihin. Tutkielman viitekehyksen keskeisiksi aiheiksi nousi elämänkaariajatteluun ja oman elämän ohjaamiseen liittyvä motivaatioteoria, luovuuden ja harjoittelun käsitteet, sekä kulttuurisen ja sosiaalisen pääoman vaikutukset. Tutkielman tulosten tarkastelussa on tärkeää huomioida, että kyselyyn vastasi jo valmiiksi motivoitunut joukko hakijoita. Tulosten perusteella urahaaveiden taustalla vaikuttavat motiivit ovat rakentuneet pitkän ajan kuluessa. Suurimmalla osalla hakijoista motivaatio koostuu erilaisista lähteistä kertyneen kulttuurisen ja sosiaalisen pääoman tukemista tavoitteista. Hakijat ovat monipuolisesti perillä oman hakualansa käytänteistä ja heidän urahaaveensa pohjautuvat realistisesti tähän tietoon. Elämänvaihe toisen ja kolmannen asteen opintojen välissä koetaan haastavaksi, johtuen valintakokeiden aiheuttamasta pullonkaulasta tulevaisuuden ja nykyhetken välillä. Suurin osa kyselyn vastaajista hakee valmennuskursseilta apua harjoitteluun ja taitojen kehittämiseen maksimoidakseen mahdollisuutensa päästä haluamalleen alalle. Kursseilta haetaan myös ymmärrystä valintakokeista. Valintakokeet ja erityisesti niiden arvostelu näyttäytyy hakijoille suljettuna prosessina, jonka perusteista he etsivät lisää tietoa mm. valmennuskurssilta.This Master’s thesis investigates the thoughts, dreams and motives which inspire a person´s career dream in the field of art and design. The topic of the dissertation was selected on the basis of personal interest. As a teacher in a school which offers training courses for applicants aiming to higher education in art & design field, I was inspired to ask these questions, in order to better understand the situation my students are in. Very limited number of applicants get into art and design related BA programs in Finland. The competition is hard, which makes students seek additional skills from training courses. This thesis also asks how these courses have affected students' dreams and career plans. The material for the qualitative study was collected by a web-based survey sent to the students in the foundation course. The survey material was analyzed by means of qualitative content analysis with the support of literature. Theoretical readings were selected by the themes observed from the survey material. Theoretical framework was thus built simultaneously with the analysis phase of the data, based on the key observations that emerged from the data. The main topics of the dissertation were motivation theory related to life course thinking and directing one's own life, the concepts of creativity and practice, and the effects of cultural and social capital. When reviewing the results of the dissertation, it is important to notice that the students who answered the survey were already motivated and interested of the subject. Based on the results, the motives behind the career dreams have been built up over a long period of time. For most applicants, motivation consists of goals supported by cultural and social capital from a variety of sources. Applicants are well versed in the practices of their field of application and their career dreams are realistically based on this knowledge. Most respondents to the survey seek training courses for help with skills development to maximize their chances of entering their desired field. They also seek an understanding of entrance examinations. The selection tests and especially their evaluation appear to the applicants as a closed process, on the basis of which they look for more information, e.g. the training course.Description
