Abstract
The purpose of the study is to find out the drivers behind self-initiated expatriation of highly skilled talent. More specifically, the study focuses on Finnish engineers’ and what kind of pull or push factors may affect their expatriation decisions. In addition, the research aims at finding out how organizations can attract highly skilled international talent. The data has been collected and analysed using qualitative methods and it is a case study focusing on CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research) as a potential employer and Switzerland as a destination country. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed by using the Gioia method. The findings of the study show that expatriation is considered as a great advantage in professional career, and it is appealing as an idea. However, due to the lack of push factors, moving abroad is considered as a secondary option in case of unemployment or in the very beginning of the career around the time of graduation. Additionally, expatriating as an assigned expatriate is preferred instead of leaving as a self-initiated expatriate in order to receive support and ensure an easy return to Finland. In addition to seeking for security and comfort when considering the expatriation options, results show strong emphasis on individuals’ preferences for low psychological distance, safety and cultural as well as geographical closeness also when considering a destination country. The reasons affecting the SIE employment decision making are mainly related to individual level factors. Based on the findings, CERN as an employer is highly appreciated but there is a clear lack of awareness when it comes to its career opportunities for engineers. Hence, targeted employer and relocation branding is recommended to raise awareness and attract candidates from Finland.Description
