Modelling of axial discontinuities in reactor cores with Serpent 2 – TRAB3D code sequence

Abstract

Partial-length burnable absorber pins have been incorporated into some modern reactor designs including European pressurised reactor (EPR). This could lead to inaccuracies when simulating the core with nodal codes. Previous work with reactor dynamics code TRAB3D and continuous-energy Monte Carlo reactor physics code Serpent 2 has shown this to be the case and a way to alleviate the effects of axial discontinuities is needed. The use of axial discontinuity factors (AADFs) is chosen as an approach to improve the accuracy of TRAB3D calculations. 3D Serpent 2 calculations of all fuel assembly types of an EPR model in hot zero power conditions (HZP) are used to solve both heterogeneous surface fluxes and partial neutron currents for axial surfaces corresponding to the nodalization of an EPR model in TRAB3D. Homogeneous surface fluxes for the axial interfaces are solved using both an analytic function expansion nodal (AFEN) scheme and a reconstruction of the neutronics model of TRAB3D. The homogeneous and heterogeneous surface fluxes are used to calculate assembly-wise leakage-corrected AADFs for the EPR model. The option to use AADFs is implemented to TRAB3D and the results of TRAB3D calculations with AADFs are compared to a 3D full core calculation with Serpent 2. The AADFs generated for AFEN did not significantly improve results. However, using AADFs specific for TRAB3D reduced the maximum difference between the axial relative powers of TRAB3D and Serpent 2 by 52.9% and the total integrated difference in the axial relative powers by 58.9%. Notable differences between TRAB3D and Serpent 2 remain. It is assumed the largest source of error is the neutronics model of TRAB3D and the relatively large values of AADFs for TRAB3D support this conclusion. The use of AADFs in axially discontinuous systems is recommended.

Moderneissa reaktorityypeissä kuten eurooppalaisessa painevesireaktorissa (EPR) hyödynnetään palavaa absorbaattoria osapitkinä sauvoina. Tämä voi johtaa epätarkkuuksien kasvamiseen, kun reaktorisydäntä mallinnetaan nodaaliohjelmilla. Tämä voidaan nähdä myös reaktoridynamiikkaohjelma TRAB3D:n ja jatkuvaenergisen Monte Carlo reaktorifysiikkaohjelma Serpent 2:n avulla aiemmin tuotetuista tuloksista, mikä osoittaa tarpeen aksiaalisten epäjatkuvuuksien mallinnustarkkuuden kehittämiselle. Näille pinnoille ratkaistiin homogeeniset pintavuot käyttämällä analyyttiseen funktioekspansioon pohjautuvaa (AFEN) nodaalimallia sekä TRAB3D:n neutroniikkamallin jäljennöstä. Heterogeenisista ja homogeenisista voista laskettiin EPR-mallille nippukohtaiset vuotokorjatut aksiaaliset epäjatkuvuustekijät. Aksiaalisten epäjatkuvuustekijöiden käytön mahdollisuus toteutettiin TRAB3D:hen ja niitä hyödyntäneitä TRAB3D -laskuja verrattiin Serpent 2:lla tehtyyn kolmiulotteiseen kokosydänlaskuun. AFEN:lla tuotetut epäjatkuvuustekijät eivät parantaneet tuloksia merkittävästi. Sen sijaan TRAB3D:n jäljennöksen avulla tuotetut epäjatkuvuustekijät vähensivät TRAB3D:n ja Serpent 2:n välistä suurinta eroa suhteellisessa aksiaalisessa tehojakaumassa 52.9% ja aksiaalista integroitua kokonaiseroa 58.9%. TRAB3D:n ja Serpent 2:n välille jäi kuitenkin selkeitä eroja. Suurin virhelähde on todennäköisesti TRAB3D:n neutroniikkamalli. Suuret TRAB3D:n aksiaalisten epäjatkuvuustekijöiden arvot tukevat tätä päätelmää. Aksiaalisten epäjatkuvuustekijöiden käyttöä aksiaalisesten epäjatkuvuuksien kanssa suositellaan.
