Abstract

Sukupuolivähemmistöjen representaatiot jäävät usein piiloon ja huomioitta, jos representaatiota ylipäätään esitetään, niin taiteessa, mediassa, kuin länsimaisessa kulttuurissa. Sukupuolivähemmistöjen olemassaoloa pyritään myös yhä vallalla kieltämään, vaikeuttamaan ja tuhoamaan niin arkisissa kohtaamisissa, kuin laajemmin poliittisesti ja hallinnollisesti. Sukupuolivähemmistöjen ja erityisesti muunsukupuolisten omissa representaatioissa korostuukin näkymättömyyden kokemus. Opinnäyte esittelee, millaisia sukupuolen moninaisuuden representaatioita nykytaiteessa luodaan. Tutkimus keskittyy erityisesti vähemmistön itse luomiin representaatioihin ja pyrkii kokoamaan yhtäläisyyksiä erilaisten representaatioiden välillä. Tutkimuksessa analysoidaan valittujen suomalaisten nykytaiteilijoiden teoksia käyttäen lähiluvun menetelmää. Tutkimus pohjaa queer- ja feministiseen teoriaan ja erityisesti Judith Butlerin teorioihin sukupuolesta ja sen esittämisestä. Butlerin teorioiden mukaan sukupuolta rakennetaan jatkuvasti tietoisesti sekä tiedostamattomasti toiselle, oli tämä toinen sitten oikea ihminen, tai idea. Sukupuolen toistamisen tavat vaativat yhteistä kulttuurisia sääntöjä ollakseen ymmärrettäviä. Sukupuolibinäärin rajat kuitenkin elävät ja muuttuvat jatkuvasti ihmisten sukupuolen toistamisen tapojen muuttuessa, niitä kyseenalaistettaessa ja haastettaessa. Butler kannustaa teksteissään sukupuoli-identiteettien toistamisen kriittiseen tarkasteluun ja normien kyseenalaistamiseen. Tämän lisäksi työssä käsitellään representaation teoriaa suhteessa sukupuolivähemmistöjen erilaisiin kuvauksiin ja käsityksiin, joita representaatioilla luodaan. Representaatioissa on huomattavia eroavaisuuksia, riippuen siitä, kuka representaatiota luo, ja mitä tarkoitusperiä varten. Sukupuolivähemmistöjen omat representaatiot voivat mm. hyödyntää stereotypioita käyttämällä niitä viestimään jaetusta vähemmistökokemuksesta. Tavoitteena tässä opinnäytteessä oli tuoda esiin joitain muunsukupuolisten omia sukupuolen representaation tapoja, kuten kehon ja kehollisuuden kuvaukset. Keho voi sukupuolivähemmistön taiteessa olla häivytetty, piilotettu, paloiteltu, mutta toisaalta myös tuotu esille ja näkyväksi merkkinä oman identiteetin todellisuudesta ja olemassaolosta. Tavoitteena oli myös tuoda näkyväksi usein näkymättömiä sukupuoli-identiteettejä. Tutkimus osoitti, että näiden identiteettitaustojen huomiotta jättäminen teoksia analysoitaessa jättää ulkopuolelle vivahteita ja merkityksiä, jotka ovat oleellisia teoksien sisällölle. Pyrkimyksenä oli niin ikään pohjustaa tietä laajemmalle tutkimukselle sukupuolivähemmistöjen representaatioista sekä samaistumisen kokemuksista nykytaiteessa.

Gender minorities tend to be overlooked and ignored, if they even are presented in arts, media, or western culture in general. The existence of gender minorities is also often rejected, made more difficult, and sought to be destroyed in everyday interactions and in wider context politically and administratively. The experience of invisibility is often present in the representations created by gender minorities themselves, especially by non-binary identities. This BA thesis presents what kinds of representations of gender diversity is created in Finnish contemporary art. This thesis focuses on representations of gender created by artists belonging in gender minorities themselves and strives to bring together different types of representation found on the analysed material. This research analyses some chosen pieces by Finnish contemporary artists using the method of close reading. The research is based in queer and feminist theory, and is especially reliant on the theories on gender and its presentation by Judith Butler. According to Butler, gender is constantly built and performed, consciously and subconsciously, to others, whether this other is real or and idea of the other. The preforming gender identities requires abiding by common cultural rules to be cohesive and understandable. However, the boundaries of the gender binary are constantly moving and changing as the way people perform their gender identities changes, as they question and challenge the existing norms. Butler encourages her readers to examine critically the way one and all perform their gender, and to question the gender norms effecting your performance of gender. In addition, this thesis expands on the theory of representation from the point of view of gender minorities and the different representations, impressions and stereotypes being created and circulated in the sphere of western culture. There are notable differences in representations depending on who creates them and for what purpose. The representations circulated by gender minorities can for example use stereotypes to signal a shared experience of gender-identity. The goal of this BA thesis was to introduce some ways that non-binary identities are being represented in contemporary art, such as through the body and bodily portrayals of identity. The gendered body can be dissolved, hidden, or disjoined, but also brought forward and visible as a sign of one’s queer body and proof of its undeniable existence. Another goal of this thesis was to shine light on the often-invisible queer gender identities. This research has shown that ignoring or being ignorant of such ‘invisible’ gender identities leaves out a plethora of nuances and meaning when analysing such artworks that deal with gender identities outside of the binary. Lastly, this research endeavours to pave way for further and more in-depth research on the representations of gender minorities, and the experiences of identifying with the art object/ object of the art in contemporary art.
