Abstract

In recent years, video streaming has consumed significant amounts of internet traffic and become the most popular service in the digital world. However, the increasing demand for streaming services carries huge amount of overhead and this increased power consumption has also added to the impacts of global warming. This paper focuses on determining the most energy-efficient and high-performance virtualization solution for video streaming. This paper introduced the current virtualization technologies first, including the operational principles and popular implementations. Additionally, we conducted a review and discussion on related prior studies including cloud computing, video streaming, and energy efficiency. The research involves evaluating the performance of the video server deployed across different platforms such as a bare metal machine, Docker, VirtualBox, and KVM under varying user loads. Key performance metrics include CPU usage, memory usage, network bandwidth, power consumption, and video packet loss rate. The results indicates that the bare machine is the most energy-efficient and least resource-usage option. However, it demonstrates unstable video performance under high user loads in our experiments. Comparatively, Docker makes a good balanced between the stable video performance and energy efficiency.
