Abstract

Over the years, numerous studies have addressed the key competencies of project managers from a general perspective, focusing on their significance for project success. Based on these studies, a wide array of competencies for project managers has been formulated, often categorized and named in slightly different ways. Furthermore, there are several project management frameworks that emphasize slightly different competencies in their certifications. The primary purpose of this thesis is to create a current shortlist of the most essential competencies for an Information Systems (IS) project manager in the Nordic job market. In this thesis, a large set of competencies was derived from the four most used project management frameworks. These competencies were then condensed into a contemporary list based on job advertisements for Nordic IS project manager positions. Additionally, five IS project managers and five IS project owners assessed these competencies using pairwise comparison technique. Finally, a synthesis was formed based on the content analysis and pairwise comparison. This process culminated in a final shortlist of five competencies that can assist individuals interested in a career as an IS project manager, either in career planning, competency development, or crafting job application. These Big Five competencies included: Communication, Teamwork, Change Management, Plan & Control, and Leadership. Furthermore, the thesis also contemplates the future evolution of the project manager's role and the required competencies in the field.
