Abstract

Preventive maintenance in automation increases the lifetime of the autonomous devices and helps to prevent unexpected production breaks. Maintenance planners of a fully automated production facility requested a tool to help monitor the lifetime and usage of different spare parts in the system. A spare part monitoring application was developed to autonomously gather operation data from the system devices and event reports from maintenance tasks. Moreover, these reports were retrieved with the use of RESTful API technology and saved into a PostgreSQL database. A Web development framework called Django was used to develop the application. Additionally, a user interface was developed to grant the user a configuration tool for creating groups of devices for each spare part that is monitored. The user interface was developed using Django's template language to create HTML and JavaScript programming with Bootstrap 5 framework and the whole application was integrated into a larger web platform as part of additional tools for the Witron maintenance team. The developed spare part monitoring system successfully allows the end-user to create groups of parts and automation devices. The system uses these groups to populate a data table that describes how much a part has been used in an individual device after its latest installation. Moreover, the user-interface displays and up dates the spare part timers table periodically during production and indicates each row that is close to or has reached a designated threshold value for that part. The new application saves the maintenance planners time when planning maintenance schedules as they no longer need to manually export all the data. Furthermore, the spare part monitoring application removes the need to create multiple Microsoft Excel files to monitor different spare parts.
