Thinking-with prehistoric posthumans: time, care, and reproductive labour in curator-artist collaborations

Abstract

This thesis consists of two essays that are grounded in an ongoing curator-artist relationship. Together the essays investigate the possibilities of reconfiguring the production-based nature of such collaborations and the possibilities of mediating process-based work.

The first essay introduces my long-term collaboration with artist Valentina Karga and ties it to current discourses in the fields of curating and art making around the concepts of interconnectedness, infrastructure, and care. By introducing specific artworks, I make visible the presence of these concepts in Valentina Karga’s work. I analyse some of the recent conversation around the practices of curating and its connection to the notion of care, while making a case for the need to approach care as a form of curatorial ‘doing’. Highlighting the overlap between the discussions on interconnectedness, infrastructure, and care, the essay calls for both structural and practical resolutions for the lack of possibilities of engaging in less production-oriented forms of practice and curator-artist relationality.

The second essay illustrates the main subject of the collaborative research I share with Valentina Karga. Using the work of archaeologist Marija Gimbutas as a starting point, we investigate the possibility of a non-anthropocentric core to prehistoric belief system and philosophies. Creating parallels between Gimbutas’ feminist theory of the matrilineal culture of ‘Old Europe’ and contemporary posthuman philosophies, I draw out similarities in the displacement of the division between human/non-human and life/non-life present in both, while simultaneously weaving in connections to Valentina Karga’s artistic practice, in which the cyclicality of matter and the generative potential of death are a recurring theme.

The connective thread between the two essays is the artificiality of hierarchy between productive and reproductive work. The importance of reproductive labour in the maintenance of the world as well as within our specific field of work become evident in the first essay. The second essay describes how the generative powers of birth and decay are disturbed through human developments towards anthropocentric worldviews where the role of reproduction becomes undervalued, gendered, and decentred from its vital role of regeneration.

Tämä opinnäytetyö koostuu kahdesta esseestä, jotka rakentuvat kuraattorin ja taiteilijan välisen pitkäkestoisen suhteen ympärille. Ne tutkivat mahdollisuuksia usein tuotantokeskeisen yhteistyömuodon uudistamiseen ja etsivät tapoja välittää prosessuaalisen työskentelyn sisältöjä.

Ensimmäinen essee kuvaa yhteistyöprosessiani taiteilija Valentina Kargan kanssa ja sitoo sen tämänhetkisiin keskusteluihin yhteenkytkeytymisen, infrastruktuurin ja hoivan käsitteistä sekä kuratoinnin että taiteen tekemisen aloilla. Esittelemällä hänen taideteoksiaan tuon näkyviin näiden käsitteiden läsnäolon Valentina Kargan taiteellisessa työssä. Analysoin joitain viimeaikaisia keskusteluita kuratoinnin käytännöistä ja sen yhteydestä hoivan käsitteeseen samalla kun korostan tarvetta lähestyä hoivaa kuratoriaalisen "tekemisen" muotona. Korostamalla yhteenkytkeytymiseen, infrastruktuuriin ja hoivaan liittyvien keskustelujen päällekkäisyyttä, essee tuo esiin tarpeen sekä rakenteellisille että käytännön ratkaisuille, jotka mahdollistaisivat vähemmän tuotantopainotteisia käytänteitä ja kuraattori-taiteilija-suhteita.

Esseistä toinen kuvaa Valentina Kargan kanssa tekemämme yhteistyöllisen tutkimuksen keskeisintä aihetta. Käyttämällä lähtökohtana arkeologi Marija Gimbutaksen tutkimusta pyrimme löytämään mahdollisuuksia ei-antroposentrisen ytimen löytämiseen esihistoriallisessa uskomusjärjestelmässä ja filosofioissa. Rinnastamalla Gimbutaksen feministisen teorian "vanhan Euroopan" matrilineaalisesta kulttuurista nykypäivän posthumanistisiin filosofioihin, piirrän niiden välille yhtäläisyyksiä ihmisen / ei-ihmisen ja elävän / ei-elävän välisen jakolinjan horjuttamisesta, solmien samalla yhteyksiä Valentina Kargan taiteelliseen työhön, jossa aineen syklisyys ja kuoleman uutta luova potentiaali toistuvat teemoina.

Kahden esseen lävitse kulkeva, ja niitä yhdistävä lanka on tuottavan ja uusintavan työn välinen keinotekoinen hierarkia. Uusintamisen merkitys niin elinympäristöjemme ylläpitämiselle kuin oman alamme sisäisille työoloille nousee esiin ensimmäisessä esseessä. Toisessa esseessä puolestaan kuvataan, kuinka uusiutumisen ja rappeutumisen uutta luovat voimat joutuvat epätasapainoon ihmisen siirtyessä kohti ihmiskeskeisiä maailmankatsomuksia, joiden myötä uusintaminen on ajautunut aliarvostettuun, sukupuolitettuun rooliin, irralleen elintärkeästä roolistaan elämän ylläpitäjänä.
