Abstract
This thesis concentrates on the problem of assuring stable quality links within an Ad Hoc Network. As a mobile node moves away from its closest neighbor, the 1mk will deteriorate and eventually break. To prevent this situation from occurring each mobile node can distribute it's location and local neighborhood This information can be used to construct the network's topology and monitor every node's connectivity to the network A software solution called a Status Mediator designs a protocol for this mechanism along with a preliminary implementation within the WJDENS project This Status Mediator is part of a Deployment Management Tool which is designed and implemented to provide management level services to increase network connectivity. This thesis defines a Deployment Information message containing mobile node status properties; including location properties, one-hop neighbor connectivity attributes and WIDENS specific codes. The method for acquiring location properties includes attaching a Global Positioning System receiver to every mobile node which provides real-time data on the node's location and movement. The neighborhood 1mk quality information is collected by the Media Access Control Layer through a MAC Layer driver. An Ad Hoc routing protocol called Optimized Link State Routing distributes these DI messages as packet extensions. This thesis conducts an analysis on these methods of collecting the node status information as well a study on DI message distribution in the WIDENS network. A system implementation of the Status Mediator and related components using, GPS, MAC Layer, and OLSR is presented.Description
