Abstract

This Master's thesis is about a Chilean architecture group known as the Valparaiso School and their wood architecture. Valparaiso School was founded in 1952, in the city of Valparaiso on the coast of central Chile. With the reorganization of the Catholic University of Valparaiso the new rector invited a group of young architects and artists to teach in Valparaiso. These new professionals formed the Valparaiso School. Chilean architect Alberto Cruz and Argentinian poet Godofredo Iommi are considered to be the leaders of the group, although many more members were involved. One of the key ideas of the group was to re-establish a creative and poetic approach to architecture, its design and building. The group felt that creativity within architecture was limited due to it being subject to regulations and demands of the constructors. Valparaiso School also had many other rather radical ideas about both design and building of architecture. To test their theories, the group bought a piece of land and founded the Open City -a sort of architecture laboratory. There the school constructed buildings at their own expense and some of the members even moved to live in the Open City permanently. Wood constructions have a long history in Chile. Especially in the wooded southern Chile wood was used already in the dwellings of the native people. After the arrival of the Spaniards wood maintained its position as the essential material of the buildings of southern Chile, although some of the most important buildings of the cities and villages were made out of stone. In the north of Chile wood constructions don't have such a long history as in the south. There building in wood started booming during the 19th century, due to the vast production of saltpetre. The ships that carried the mineral from Chile to northern America came back loaded with Oregon pine to give the ships some weight. The wood left in the harbours was then used for building in the northern and central Chile. As the ideas of Modern Movement reached Chile, the use of wood decreased considerably whilst the use of concrete became more popular. Valparaiso School was one of the few to use wood in architecture during the 20th century. Many of the buildings made by the group were wooden, although other materials were used as well. The members of the group built many different types of wooden buildings including churches, public spaces and private homes. Wood as a material aligned with many ideas of the school, especially the habit of designing and building simultaneously directly on the site. Many of the theories and ideas of Valparaiso School are still current topics in wood architecture. Apart from the creative approach, the group gave importance to human scale, handiwork, the use of local materials and working in groups. Valparaiso School was also inspired by the history of Latin America and its traditions. Creating an original, Latin American identity instead of copying western examples was one the main objectives of Valparaiso School.

Tämä diplomityö käsittelee Valparaison koulukuntana tunnettua chileläistä arkkitehtiryhmää ja sen puuarkkitehtuuria. Valparaison koulukunta syntyi vuonna 1952, Keski-Chilen rannikolla sijaitsevassa Valparaison kaupungissa. Valparaison Katolisen Yliopiston uudistuksen myötä koulun uusi rehtori kutsui ryhmän nuoria arkkitehteja ja taitelijoita opettamaan Valparaisoon. Naista uusista professoreista ja opettajista kehittyi Valparaison koulukunta. Ryhmään kuului monia jäseniä, mutta sen johtohahmoina voidaan nähdä chileläinen arkkitehti Alberto Cruz ja argentiinalainen runoilija Godofredo Iommi. Ryhmän keskeisiin ideoihin kuului tavoittaa uudelleen luova ja runollinen lähestymistapa arkkitehtuuriin, sen suunnitteluun ja rakentamiseen. Ryhmä koki, että luovuus arkkitehtuurissa oli jäänyt rakennussäädösten ja rakennuttajien vaatimusten jalkoihin. Valparaison koulukunnalla oli monia radikaaleja ideoita niin suunnittelusta kuin rakentamisestakin. Kokeillakseen käytännössä teorioitaan, ryhmä osti myös maa-alueen ja perusti sinne Open Cityn, eräänlaisen arkkitehtuurilaboratorion, jossa koulukunta toteutti rakennuksia. Osa ryhmän jäsenistä muutti Open Cityyn myös asumaan. Puurakentamisella on Chilessä pitkä historia. Varsinkin Etelä-Chilessä, jossa on paljon metsää, jo alkuperäiskansat käyttivät puuta asumuksissaan. Myös espanjalaisten saapumisen jälkeen puu pysyi Etelä-Chilessä rakennusten tärkeimpänä materiaalina, ainoastaan kaupunkien ja kylien keskeisimmät rakennukset saatettiin rakentaa kivestä. Pohjois-Chilessä puurakentamisella ei ole yhtä pitkää traditiota kuin etelässä. Siellä puurakentaminen lähti nousuun vasta 1800-luvulla kaliumnitraatin tuotannon myötä. laivat, jotka kuljettivat mineraalia Chilestä Pohjois-Amerikkaan, palasivat painon vuoksi Yhdysvalloista tuodulla Oregon-männyllä lastattuina. Tätä satamiin jätettyä puuta alettiin Pohjois- ja Keski-Chilessä käyttää rakentamiseen. Modernismin ideoiden saavuttua Chileen puurakentaminen väheni huomattavasti betonin suosion kasvaessa. Valparaison koulukunta olikin yksi niistä harvoista tahoista Chilessä, jotka hyödynsivät puuta arkkitehtuurissa 1900-luvuJla. Useat koulukunnan rakennukset olivat puusta, vaikka muitakin materiaaleja käytettiin. Ryhmän jäsenet toteuttivat puusta monenlaisia rakennuksia -kirkkoja, julkisia tiloja sekä yksityiskoteja. Puu tuki monia koulukunnan ideoita, erityisesti tapaa suunnitella ja rakentaa samaan aikaan paikan päällä. Monet Valparaison koulukunnan teorioista ja ideoista ovat edelleen ajankohtaisia puurakentamisessa. Koulukunnalle tärkeitä asioita arkkitehtuurissa olivat luovan lähestymistavan lisäksi ihmisen mittakaava, käsityö, paikalliset materiaalit sekä ryhmätyöskentely. Ideoita ammennettiin myös latinalaisen Amerikan historiasta ja kansallisesta traditiosta. Oman, latinalaisamerikkalaisen identiteetin luominen länsimaisten mallien kopioimisen sijaan olikin koulukunnalle keskeinen tavoite.
