Abstract

Due to the growing specialization and fragmentation in the construction industry, new ways to promote co-working and knowledge transfer are sought. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has provided technical tools for increasing knowledge transfer while the development of new working methods lags behind. Agile philosophies have been introduced to the construction industry as new ways of working. In this thesis agile methods are studied in the context of knowledge transfer in construction project networks. A theoretical study is conducted in which knowledge transfer and agile methods in the construction industry are discussed. A theoretical framework is then created that shows the effects of agile methods in knowledge transfer in the construction industry. A case study presenting an agile co-working sprint in the conceptual design phase of a public school building is used to validate the framework and bring forth the requirements for implementing such a sprint. Knowledge transfer in the construction industry is affected by a number of aspects. Knowledge boundaries hinder knowledge transfer and become increasingly difficult to cross as the novelty in knowledge grows. There are also communicational, social, organizational and physical distances between knowledge transfer participants that hinder knowledge transfer. Common knowledge in the industry can act as a knowledge transfer platform, while communities of practice can promote creating and sharing knowledge. According to the case study, applying agile co-working methods can promote knowledge transfer by lowering knowledge transfer boundaries and diminishing distances between knowledge transfer participants. Transferring knowledge across boundaries is alleviated while communicational, social, organizational and physical distances are diminished. During an agile co-working sprint the common knowledge of the participants is altered and developed. When implemented as a continuous practice, the agile co-working sprint can create communities of practice. The main benefit of the sprint from the viewpoint of knowledge transfer was the elimination of latency. In order to implement agile methods in the construction industry, there are requirements both on a project network and project level. There are also requirements for the ways of working during agile co-working. Most importantly, change should be accepted as inevitable, multi-skilled and self-managing teams should be formed, accurate and up-to-date metrics should be utilized and decisions postponed to the last possible moment. When implementing a similar sprint as the case studied, thorough preparations are the key to its success.

Rakennusalalla erikoistuminen ja sen myötä alan sirpaloituminen on johtanut uusien tiedon siirtoa ja yhteistyötä edistävien työtapojen etsimiseen. Tietomallinnus tarjoaa teknisen alustan tiedon tehokkaammalle siirrolle, mutta uusien työtapojen kehittäminen on jäänyt teknologisen kehityksen jälkeen. Rakennusalalle on tuotu uusia työtapoja ketterien menetelmien muodossa. Tässä diplomityössä näitä menetelmiä tutkitaan tiedon siirron näkökulmasta rakennusalan projektiverkostojen kontekstissa. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen osa keskittyy tiedon siirtoon ja ketteriin metodeihin rakennusalalla. Tutkimuksen perusteella luodaan teoreettinen viitekehys, jossa kuvataan ketterien menetelmien vaikutus tiedon siirtoon rakennusalan projektiverkostoissa. Tätä viitekehystä testataan tapaustutkimuksen avulla, joka esittelee ketterän yhteistyökokeilun julkisen koulurakennuksen luonnossuunnitteluvaiheessa. Tapaustutkimuksessa käydään läpi myös vaatimukset tällaisen kokeilun toteuttamiseksi. Tiedon siirtoon rakennusalalla vaikuttavat useat tekijät. Tiedon siirtoa hidastavat rajat, joiden ylittäminen on sitä vaikeampaa, mitä uudemmasta tiedosta on kyse. Lisäksi tiedon siirtoon osallistuvien henkilöiden välillä on viestinnällisiä, sosiaalisia, organisatorisia ja fyysisiä etäisyyksiä, jotka ehkäisevät tiedon siirtoa. Yhteinen tieto rakennusalalla voi toimia tiedon siirron kanavana, ja käytäntöyhteisöt voivat edesauttaa tiedon luomista ja jakamista. Tapaustutkimuksen mukaan ketterät yhteistyömenetelmät voivat edesauttaa tiedon siirtoa yllämainittujen tekijöiden kautta. Menetelmät edesauttavat tiedon siirtoa rajojen yli ja samalla pienentavat viestinnallista, sosiaalista, organisatorista ja fyysistä etäisyyttä. Yhteistyön aikana luodaan ja kehitetään yhteistä tietoa työskentelyyn osallistujien välillä. Mikäli työskentelytapa voitaisiin tuoda rakennusalalle jatkuvana käytäntönä, se voisi myös luoda käytäntöyhteisöjä. Suurin hyöty yhteistyökokeilussa tiedon siirron näkökulmasta oli viiveen poistaminen tiedon siirrossa. Jotta ketteriä menetelmiä voidaan tuoda rakennusalalle, tietyt vaatimukset tulee täyttyä sekä projektiverkosto- että projektitasolla. Vaatimuksia on myös itse työskentelyyn liittyen ketterän yhteistyön aikana. Tärkeimpiin vaatimuksiin kuuluu suhtautuminen muutoksiin välttämättöminä, eri alojen osaajista koostuvien itseohjautuvien tiimien muodostaminen, tarkkojen ja ajantasaisten mittaristojen käyttäminen ja päätösten lykkääminen myöhäisimpään mahdolliseen ajankohtaan. Tapaustutkimuksen kaltaisessa yhteistyökokeilussa perusteelliset valmistelut takaavat onnistuneen työskentelyn.
