Abstract
My Bachelor’s thesis consists of two parts: an essay called A Modern Muse and a book of photographs called Lustrum. The essay is a ponderous attempt to describe musedom in a historical and personal context through examples of past and present artists from primary and secondary written sources. The series of images presented in the photo book are taken with, of, or inspired by someone I consider a muse. In the essay I pave way to understanding what a muse’s role as source of inspiration is for an artist. I argue against the sexism that has existed in musedom since the Reneissance. The ethical problems raised by the gender roles and the responsibilities of both parties in an artist-muse relationship are looked into through examples from past artists and writers. I arrive at a personal explanation for what a muse’s role is in my own work and what my responsibilities in that relationship are. I end my text with a short summary of the muse relationship that inspired the photographs in my visual part.Description
