Implementing software configuration management in an agile development project

Abstract

This thesis studies the implementation of Software Configuration Management (SCM) in an agile development project. The goal of this thesis is to find SCM best practices suitable for the target project and agile development.

The thesis begins with a description of the target project, the definition of core SCM activities, and an overview of agile development. Existing solutions for agile SCM are sought in literature. Some of the existing SCM activities are connected to the agile world and to the Scrum process in particular. In addition a brief description of agile development is presented in order to be able to evaluate the implemented development process later on.

The middle part documents the attempts to improve SCM practices in the target project using action research. It describes the project environment in greater detail and reports the experiences from the evaluated configuration management practices.

The end of the thesis analyses and discusses the results of the middle part from a SCM point of view. The discussion forms a connection between the used software development process and SCM. The implementation of the chosen process and its agility are assessed shortly. The discussion part presents the importance of tool support in modern SCM and specifically in the agile target project. In addition, the used method of introducing new configuration management practices and the importance of motivation in that work are discussed.

Tämä diplomityö tutkii ohjelmiston konfiguraationhallinnan toteuttamista ketterän kehityksen projektissa. Työn tavoitteena on löytää kohdeprojektiin ja ketterään kehitykseen sopivia konfiguraationhallintakäytäntöjä.

Työ alkaa kohdeprojektin kuvauksella, konfiguraationhallinnan ydinaktiviteettien määrittelyllä sekä katsauksella ketterään kehitykseen. Olemassa olevia ratkaisuja ketterälle konfiguraationhallinnalle etsitään kirjallisuudesta. Osalle perinteisistä konfiguraationhallinnan aktiviteeteista muodostetaan yhteys ketterän kehityksen maailmaan ja erityisesti Scrum-prosessiin. Lisäksi pyritään kuvaamaan lyhyesti mitä ketterä kehitys on, jotta käytettävää prosessia voidaan arvioida myöhemmin.

Työn keskiosa dokumentoi konfiguraationhallintakäytäntöjen parantamiseksi kohdeprojektissa toimintatutkimusmenetelmällä tehdyn työn. Se kuvaa tarkemmin ympäristöä, jossa projektia kehitetään ja raportoi kokemuksista liittyen kokeiltuihin käytäntöihin.

Työn loppuosa analysoi ja pohtii keskiosan tuloksia projektin sekä konfiguraationhallinnan näkökulmasta. Pohdinnassa muodostuu yhteys käytettävän ohjelmistokehitysprosessin ja konfiguraationhallinnan välille. Valitun prosessin toteutusta ja ketteryyttä arvioidaan lyhyesti. Pohdinnassa tulee esille työkalutuen tärkeys modernissa konfiguraationhallinnassa ja erityisesti tarkasteltavana olevassa ketterässä projektissa. Lisäksi tarkastellaan kokeiltua tapaa uusien konfiguraationhallintakäytäntöjen käyttöönotossa ja motivoinnin tärkeyttä siinä työssä.
