Abstract

This thesis studies the use of the usage of True First-Person cameras in horror games. Our interest is to evaluate how this camera perspective affects the feeling of horror, the sense of body awareness, and the feeling of being present in the game world. The topic of camera design in horror games is a rather less discussed subject in academic game research. Based on literature review, the importance of camera design in horror games is well established, but there are not many studies related to camera design. A True First-Person Camera is a first-person perspective where the camera is attached to an animated body. A game was developed especially for this thesis and an experiment was conducted with 17 participants. The acquired data was processed and we can draw the following conclusions: the True First-Person camera can be a good option for horror, and it may be overall better at grounding the players in the game world. The findings can be of use to horror games developers, especially those focused on intimate, survival, and character-focused experiences.
