Abstract

Evolution is a natural way for technology development. For example, although telephone calls using fixed phones are in the mainstream today, wireless communications offered by cellular operators are overcoming the traditional telephone network. In the same way, VoIP (Voice over IP) and in particular those applications using this technology that allow transmitting voice over the Internet, are soon likely to be in great demand, especially by those using computers and those having wireless devices. Some problems have to be solved though before this can happen. Bad quality of service is the most important one. Besides solving problems in VoIP, reliable signalling protocols capable of supporting Presence Applications, and many other services that are not available for PSTN users, are necessary to attract new users to use this technology. In this master's thesis I will review the current stage of Voice over IP, including the Presence Event Package for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and suggest some improvements.I will also implement a prototype of the Session Initiation Protocol and the Presence Event Package that can be used with a protocol like RTP (Real Time Protocol) for, transmitting voice over IP. This application can be used for creating and testing new services based on the, Session Initiation Protocol.
