Abstract
This thesis embarks on a creative exploration of Fictional User Interface (FUI) design, unravelling the artistry behind the construction of imaginative digital worlds in visual narratives. Through an in-depth analysis of FUI elements within the context of films and television series, this study seeks to understand how designers conceptualise and implement interfaces that integrate effortlessly into the digital landscapes of cinematic and episodic storytelling. Using a qualitative research framework, this research examines the creative process of creating fictional interfaces, examining the visual aesthetics, narrative integration, and technological plausibility that contribute to their immersive quality. Analysing the use of FUIs in landmark productions showcase the evolution of FUI design, from early graphical interfaces to contemporary, intricately detailed visual narratives. The thesis also explores the experiential impact of fictional interfaces on audience engagement and suspension of disbelief. By scrutinising audience reactions and feedback, the study assesses the effectiveness of FUI design in enhancing storytelling, character development, and overall viewer experience. Moreover, this research highlights the pivotal collaboration between FUI designers and production designers. Analysing the symbiotic relationship between these creative roles, we explore how the integration of fictional interfaces into the broader production design enhances narrative cohesiveness and visual storytelling. Through case studies and research, this study unveils the importance of this collaboration in achieving a harmonious visual language that resonates with the thematic elements of the narrative. In addition to the creative and collaborative aspects, this study explores the legal considerations surrounding fictional interface design. Exploring the role of intellectual property laws in safeguarding these unique digital creations and real world technology, we examine how legal frameworks intersect with the imaginative realm of FUI design. The outcomes of this study offers valuable insights for FUI designers, production designers and storytellers navigating the uncharted territories of fictional interface creation. By understanding the intricate interplay between creativity, audience perception, collaborative efforts, and legal considerations, filmmakers can contribute to the advancement of visual storytelling. This thesis not only adds depth to the discourse on FUI design but also serves as a creative exploration into the fusion of technology, narrative, collaborative efforts, and legal frameworks within the dynamic landscape of visual storytelling.Description
