Abstract
Kestämättömät tuotanto- ja kulutustavat ovat johtaneet luonnonvarojen ehtymiseen ja tämä uhkaa hyvinvointia tulevaisuudessa. Omistamiseen ja kuluttamiseen liittyvät asenteet ovat muuttumassa ja ihmisten pyrkimyksistä uusiin, kestävämpiin elintapoihin on syntynyt monia uusia aatteita, ilmiöitä ja palveluita. Useat tällaisista uusista palveluista sijoittuvat jakamistalouden alle. Jakamistaloudessa korostuu omistamisen sijaan muun muassa resurssien jakaminen, lainaaminen ja vuokraaminen. Jakamisesta koetaan olevan hyötyä niin taloudellisesti, ekologisesti kuin sosiaalisestikin. Yhä useammat ihmiset jakavatkin nykyään esimerkiksi kotinsa tarjoamalla sitä matkailijoille majoitusvaihtoehdoksi. Koti ja sen esineet muodostavat intiimin ympäristön, jonka jakaminen ventovieraiden kanssa voi tuntua vaikealta, vaikka toimintaa pidettäisiinkin järkevänä. Onkin siis kiinnostavaa kysyä: millaiset ominaisuudet kodin säilytyskalusteessa voisivat edesauttaa resurssien jakamista ja kannustaa järkevämpään kulutuskulttuuriin? Työ koostuu teoreettisesta osasta ja kodin säilytyskalusteen prototyypistä. Teoreettinen osa tutkii kotia, kodin esineistöä ja näiden merkityksiä hyvinvoinnin, yksityisyyden sekä identiteetin näkökulmista kirjallisuuden, haastatteluiden ja aiemman tutkimuksen avulla. Teoreettisen osan löydösten pohjalta suunnittelin ja valmistin säilytyskalusteen prototyypin, joka edustaa tulkintaani kodin jakamisen keskeisistä tavoitteista ja keinoista, joilla näiden tavoitteiden saavuttamista voitaisiin edistää muotoilun avulla. Tarpeesta yksityisyyteen on syntynyt laaja kirjo säilytyskalusteita, jotka mahdollistavat salaisuuksien säilyttämisen erilaisten lukkojen ja salalokeroiden avulla. Kotia vuokrattaessa vieraan viihtyminen on kuitenkin vähintään yhtä tärkeää kuin vakituisen asukkaan yksityisyys. Työn lopputulos, Tide-kaappi, mahdollistaa yksityisten esineiden säilyttämisen katseilta piilossa ja tarjoaa samaan aikaan mahdollisuuden väliaikaiseen säilytykseen vieraalle. Taiteellisilla pyrkimyksilläni ja tuotesemantiikalla on ollut suuri rooli prototyypin toteutuksessa. Huonekalun prototyyppi esitellään teoreettisen osan yhteydessä valokuvien ja mittapiirustusten avulla.Unsustainable production - and consumption patterns have formed a risk to future welfare as we are about to overconsume our natural resources. Attitudes towards ownership and material possessions are changing as people are pursuing new, more sustainable ways of life. New ideas, movements and business models have emerged. Many of these are based on the central idea of sharing economy: instead of owning things, people rent, loan or otherwise share their possessions. Sharing is constantly gaining its popularity as people see it as a good way to gain economical, ecological and social benefits. For instance, many people today share their home by renting it for travellers via different online platforms. However, a home, together with the personal items of the homeowner, form an intimate space. One that can be hard to open for strangers even if the idea feels profitable. Therefore, it is interesting to ask: what kind of features in home storage furniture could ease the action of sharing one’s home and encourage a more sensible way of consumption? This study consists of two parts: a theoretical part and a prototype of storage furniture for the home. The theoretical part is a study of the home and personal possessions from the viewpoints of wellbeing, privacy and identity with the help of literature, previous research and interviews. Based on the findings of the theoretical part, I have designed and built a prototype of storage furniture for the home. This prototype represents my interpretation of the central objectives of sharing the home and how it could be possible to reach these goals with the help of design. There are numerous designs such as safes and drawers with secret compartments in the history of furniture design that help people ensure the safekeeping of their private possessions. However, when a home is shared with paying guests, the comfort of the guests is at least as important as the privacy of the homeowner. Therefore the end result of this study, the Tide-cabinet is designed so that in addition to offering the homeowners some private storage space, temporary storage space for the guests is also provided. The pursuit for artistically high quality and my affection for product semiotics have played a large role in the making of the cabinet. The cabinet is presented together with the theoretical part.
