Abstract
This thesis examines the conception and implications of documenting a design process as a narrative, by means of developing a narrative tool for design documentation. Narrativisation of the design process may offer an alternative to mainstream i.e. ‘canon’ ways of depicting and recording design processes such as Design Thinking models. The concept of narrativisation is explored by synthesizing a framework for documentation of a design process in form of a visual narrative template. The template was shared with professional designers, who populated the template according to a recently completed design project. The filled-in templates were then analyzed in graphic elicitation interviews together with design students. The interview outcomes were analyzed through thematic analysis. The thesis outcomes indicate that it is possible to conceptualize a design process as a narrative, although a template may not be the ideal format for narrativisation. Based on the outcomes, four domains for future exploration of narrative approaches in design are proposed: reflection and learning; communication; design solutions; and design theory.Description
