Abstract

Abstract Mobile voice is and has been the single most important application that rapidly enabled the deployment and adoption of wireless services across globe by operators and consumers. Owing to the promise of wireless internet (convergence of internet and wireless technologies) today, the wireless industry is witnessing more and more internet technology services being delivered to handheld devices via wireless networks to end consumers. Explosive data consumption in wireless networks has prompted the operators to quickly enhance their core networks to support high data rate delivery. Long-term Evolution (LTE), as an access technology, offers a significantly lower cost per bit over existing technologies while providing a very high-speed, reduced low latency broadband network, ideal for delivering real-time services like packet voice, messaging and video. However, LTE today poses a major challenge for the operators as it clearly lacks a consistent and standards-defined way to implement key revenue generating services such as voice and messaging. This thesis explores various options available for the operator to implement the voice services over LTE networks and focuses in depth on the intermediate approach to implement voice over LTE known as VoLGA (Voice over LTE via Generic Access Networks) and analyses the key benefits for implementing the same.
