Abstract

To grow and succeed, food delivery platforms must continuously acquire new restaurants and broaden their selection. By recognizing the restaurants most likely to generate high sales, platforms can allocate resources more efficiently and increase profitability. With the increasing availability of data, food delivery platforms have the potential to use advanced analytics to predict restaurant performance and prioritize leads accordingly. This thesis developed a machine learning model to predict the monetary value of leads to prioritize sales efforts effectively. To achieve this, four different machine learning models were built, tested, and compared to find the most accurate one for restaurant value prediction. Gradient boosting, specifically XGBoost, was identified as the most accurate model based on its superior Adjusted R2 score, Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and Decile Rank Error (DRE). Based on the XGBoost model’s outputs, this thesis identified the strongest predictors of restaurant value for a food delivery platform as 1) nearby population, 2) the number of customer ratings on competing food delivery platforms, 3) geo-graphical neighborhood-level location, and 4) the number of search engine ratings. This study highlights the potential of machine learning in predicting the monetary value of sales leads for improving lead prioritization. This is the first study to apply machine learning in predicting the value of leads instead of their probability of conversion. This is especially relevant for companies that operate in industries with high buyer-to-seller ratios and in seller’s markets. Future research could explore combining these predictive models with conversion probability data to refine lead scoring further. Additionally, applying this approach across different regions and industries would help validate its broader applicability.

Ruuankuljetusyritysten on kasvaakseen ja menestyäkseen jatkuvasti hankittava uusia ravintoloita ja laajennettava valikoimaansa. Tunnistamalla ravintolat, jotka todennäköisimmin tuottavat suurimman myynnin, alustat voivat kohdentaa resurssejaan tehokkaammin ja lisätä kannattavuuttaan. Datan saatavuuden kasvaessa ruuankuljetusalustojen on mahdollista hyödyntää analytiikkaa entistä paremmin ennustaakseen ravintoloiden suorituskykyä ja priorisoidakseen myyntiliidejä. Tässä diplomityössä kehitettiin menetelmä myyntiliidien priorisoimiseksi koneoppimismallin ennustaman rahallisen arvon perusteella. Tätä varten luotiin neljä erilaista koneoppimismallia tarkimman ravintoloiden myynnin ennustavan mallin löytämiseksi. Gradienttivahvistus, tarkemmin XGBoost, tunnistettiin tarkimmaksi malliksi sen paremman korjatun R² -arvon, keskimääräisen absoluuttisen prosenttivirheen (MAPE) ja desiilien sijoitusvirheen (DRE) perusteella. Luodun XGBoost-mallin tulosten perusteella ruuankuljetusalustan vahvimmiksi ravintola-arvon ennustajiksi tunnistettiin 1) lähialueen väestömäärä, 2) asiakasarvosteluiden määrä kilpailevilla ruuankuljetusalustoilla, 3) maantieteellinen naapurustotason sijainti ja 4) hakukonearvosteluiden määrä. Tutkimuksen tulokset korostavat koneoppimisen potentiaalia myyntiliidien priorisointiin niiden rahallisen arvon perusteella. Tämä on ensimmäinen tutkimus, joka soveltaa koneoppimista liidien rahallisen arvon ennustamiseen niiden konversiotodennäköisyyden sijaan. Liidien rahallisen arvon ennustaminen on erityisen tärkeää yrityksille, jotka toimivat aloilla, joilla on korkea määrä ostajia suhteessa myyjiin ja myyjän markkinat. Tulevat tutkimukset voisivat tutkia arvopohjaisten ennustemallien yhdistämistä konversiotodennäköisyysdatan kanssa myyntiliidien tuottaman odotusarvollisen hyödyn selvittämiseksi. Tämän lisäksi tässä diplomityössä käytetyn lähestymistavan soveltaminen uusiin maihin ja toimialoihin auttaisi vahvistamaan sen laajempaa sovellettavuutta.
