Abstract
This Master thesis is a personal experience and visual observation-based theoretical research, with an artistic/design outcome in the form of a fashion collection. Theory-driven discussion on memory, human-thing entanglement and intimacy expand the reach of the thesis towards topics relevant to wider practice-based fashion research. The thesis asks how a character can illuminate the individual relation to her wardrobe while expressing a regional identity within a specific time and space. Focused on the independent post-occupation Baltic identity and both a sense of belonging to and geographical distance from the region, the MA thesis collection expresses narratives of cultural and biographical occasions and the relationship to the garments within the personal wardrobe of a young adult. The collection is built on the personal the impression ofgrowing up in a recently independent Baltic country in the late 90's-early 2000s. Through both more theoretical discussion and the creative design process, the aim is to expand and open a conversation on the research topic – the Baltic region identity. Choosing a topic that feels personally familiar, allows the author to explore and progress using multi-disciplinary design and research methods. Therefore the thesis is not only a personal reflection of memories and sentimental occasions but also a projection of an unexplored identity and example of finding a unique way to build a fashion collection concept.Description
