Abstract
Patterns Of Nature is a production based thesis divided in two parts: the research part where a co-design method called probes is studied and utilised to be a part of an inspirational process, and the production part in which I further reflect on the probe findings and design a wallpaper pattern collection. In the research part of the thesis the probes were analysed as an inspirational method for the project, with the difficulties and possibilities they offer to a designer. During the research I constructed a probe set of my own and distributed it to a set of participants. The material gained from the use of probes was equally important, and studying and reflecting the participants memories and feelings of childhood nature offered central themes and inspirations for the wallpaper collection. The thesis also includes an introduction to the basics of pattern design and the history of wallpapers in Finland. In the artistic production I contemplated on the information gained from the probes. The research worked as a basis for the production part of the thesis, resulting in five wallpaper pattern families and a total of 18 patterns. The theme for the probes and the resulting project was childhood memories of nature, and the pattern collections are divided to reflect the distinctive thematic and emotional aspects of the research. In the production part I also tried to improve my own artistic expression and the skills in conducting artistic research. The objectives of the thesis were to study the probes as a working method and to collect applicable inspirational material for the design project. The research process was found to be useful because it provided deeper insights to the participants memories and allowed them to tell their stories in their own voice. The probes proved to be a versatile tool for a designer especially as an inspirational method, as long as the process is thoroughly planned. The thesis offers a different perspective for the use of probes that can give new and unexpected insights to a designer, and shows how probes are overall interesting to work with. It also showcases the process of designing and working with the probes and transferring the gained knowledge into an artistic or a design project.Patterns Of Nature on produktiopohjainen opinnäytetyö, joka jakautuu kahteen osaan: tutkimusosaan jossa co-design -menetelmää nimeltä "luotaimet" tutkitaan ja hyödynnetään osana inspiraatioprosessia, sekä produktio-osaan jossa pohdiskelen syvemmin tutkimuksen tuloksia ja hyödynnän niitä tapettikuosimalliston suunnittelussa. Tutkimusosassa luotaimia analysoitiin inspiraatiometodina haasteineen ja mahdollisuuksineen. Tutkimuksen aikana suunnittelin ja kasasin oman luotaimeni ja jaoin sen osallistujaryhmälle. Luotaimien avulla hankittu materiaali oli projektille yhtä tärkeässä asemassa itse luotainten suunnittelun kanssa, ja osallistujien lapsuusajan luontomuistojen ja tunteiden käsittely ja työstäminen oli keskeisessä osassa kuosimalliston teemojen ja vaikutteiden synnyssä. Opinnäyte sisältää myös tietoa kuosisuunnittelun ja suomalaisten tapettien historiasta. Taiteellisessa suunnitteluproduktiossa käsittelin luotaimista saatuja tietoja. Tutkimus toimi pohjana opinnäytteen produktio-osuudelle, joka koostui lopulta viidestä kuosiperheestä joissa oli yhteensä 18 kuosia. Yhteisenä teemana sekä tutkimukselle että kuoseille oli lapsuusajan luontomuistot, ja kuosiperheet onkin suunniteltu heijastamaan tutkimuksesta saadun materiaalin erilaisia tunnepohjaisia ja temaattisia puolia. Produktio-osuudessa pyrin myös parantamaan omaa taiteellista ilmaisuani, sekä kykyjäni toteuttaa taiteellista inspiraatiotutkimusta. Opinnäytteen tavoitteet olivat luotainten tutkiminen työskentelymetodina, sekä käyttökelpoisen materiaalin kerääminen suunnitteluprosessia varten. Tutkimusprosessi osoittautui hyödylliseksi ja antoisaksi, koska siitä saatu materiaali mahdollisti syvällisen perehtymisen osallistujien luontomuistoihin ja antoi heille mahdollisuuden avata tarinoitaan omin sanoin. Luotaimet ovat tutkimuksen perusteella suunnittelijan kannalta monipuolinen työkalu inspiraatiotutkimukseen, kunhan niiden suunnittelu ja käyttö toteutetaan huolellisesti. Opinnäyte tarjoaa suunnittelijalle luotaimien käyttöön erilaista näkökulmaa, josta saattaa seurata uudenlaisia oivalluksia ja joka osoittaa luotainten kanssa työskentelyn olevan mielenkiintoista ja antoisaa. Se myös esittelee luotaimien suunnitteluprosessia ja niiden kanssa työskentelyä, sekä niistä saadun tiedon hyödyntämistä taiteellisessa suunnitteluprosessissa.Description
