Abstract
During the spring semester of 2025, nine architecture students from Aalto University participated in the Interplay of Cultures Studio, guided by Professors and teachers Saija Hollmén, Taru Niskanen, and Meeri Pitkänen, which culminated in a 26-day field trip to Ghana, Kumasi.
We spent most of our time in Kumasi, but toward the end of the fieldwork, we traveled north to explore vernacular architecture. There, we met Mohammed Muniru Cosmos, a local guide who made it possible for us to visit two villages—Sanga and Sorogo.
It was, for all of us, an experience we will never forget. Each drawing session ended with informal gatherings in which the local community was invited to view the work. These exchanges created moments of mutual curiosity and appreciation.
This publication aims to reflect on those experiences and share how respectful, situated, and collaborative fieldwork can deepen our understanding of architecture across cultures.
