Abstract
Lopputyöni taiteellinen osuus on pukusuunnittelu Paula Vesalan kirjoittamaan näytelmään Transfinlandia, jonka kantaesitys sai ensi-iltansa Mediakeskus Lumen studionäyttämöllä 10.4.2014. Näytelmän ohjasi Piia Peltola. Lopputyöni kirjallinen osuus nojaa kokonaisuudessaan taiteelliseen työskentelyyni kyseisessä näytelmässä. Näytelmä kertoo tarinan sukupuolenkorjausprosessia läpikäyvästä pojasta, josta tulee nainen. Olen rajannut kirjallisen työni käsittelemään taiteellista pukusuunnittelutyötä, jonka työvaiheet avaan lukijalle oman taiteilijaidentiteettini silmin. Näin syvennän lukijalle taiteellista tietoutta teokseen. Lopputyöni kirjallinen osuus sitoo kaikki maisteriopintoni yhteen. Se on ammatillinen tiedostamisprosessi, missä kerron miten ja miksi minusta on tullut pukusuunnittelija sekä lähtökohdista kiinnostukseeni teoksessa toteutunutta työtapaa kohtaan. Avaan ohjaajan sekä kirjailijan taustoja näytelmätekstin aiheeseen, esittelen sukupuolen moninaisuuteen ja teatterin tekemiseen kuuluvaa sanastoa sekä kuvailen tiivistetysti näytelmän juonen. Tutkin teoksen dramaturgiaa lukuharjoituksen- ja lattiatyöpajan lähtökohdista sekä kerron niiden merkityksestä työskentelyprosessiin. Kirjoitan tekstianalyysin tekemisestä, avaan näytelmään liittyviä visuaalisia mielikuvia sekä käyn läpi teoksen dramaturgisia lähtökohtia roolikirjon osalta. Kerron myös kuvallisesta kohtauskartasta, joka syntyi tekstianalyysin pohjalta sekä siitä, miten se palveli työryhmäämme. Tässä työssä tuon esiin näytelmän sisällön rakenteet sekä karaktäärien jäsentymisen näytelmässä. Pohdin päähenkilön kuljetusta pojasta naiseksi, teini-iän ruumiillisuutta sekä sukupuolien sekoittamista visuaalisin keinoin. Kirjoitan auki puvustuksen ennakkosuunnitteluvaiheen sekä sen kuinka näyttämön visuaalinen kokonaiskuva alkoi hahmottua. Kerron myös valmistautumisestani näytelmän harjoituskaudelle kuvaamalla työskentelyäni pukuvarastossa. Selvitän lukijalle Genderfuck- ja Mutatyöpajojen lähtökohdat, mitä niissä haluttiin tutkia sekä sen miten ne palvelivat työprosessiamme. Tutkin myös mitä roolivaatteet merkitsevät näyttelijälle. Haastattelin kahta näytelmässä mukana ollutta näyttelijää, jotka olivat muuntaneet vaatteen avulla sukupuoltaan. Laatimissani haastatteluissa vaatteen tunnun merkitys näyttelijälle nousi vahvasti esiin. Työvaiheiden ja kirjoitusprosessin jälkeen pohdin dialogisuuden roolia teatterin tekemisessä. Pohdin myös ennakkosuunnitelmien merkitystä prosessinomaisessa työskentelyssä, työn teknisen puolen toteutumista sekä harjoitusvaateluonnostelun merkitystä suunnittelutyössä. Transfinlandia oli valmistumishetkellään vahvasti kiinni ajassa ja sen sanoma on poliittisesti kantaaottava. Tässä työssä tuon esiin, miten teatteriesityksemme vaikutti translaista käytyyn yhteiskunnalliseen keskusteluun.The artistic part of my thesis is the costume design for the play Transfinlandia, written by Paula Vesala, which premiered on the studio stage of Media Centre Lume in 10.4.2014. The play was directed by Piia Peltola. The written part of my thesis relies on my artistic work for the play. The plays narrative tells a story of a boy going through a sex change process in which he becomes a woman. I have narrowed down the written part to my artistic costume design work, and I will be explaining the stages of it to the reader through the eyes of my own artist identity. By doing this, I will be deepen the artistic knowledge of the work to the readers. The written part of my thesis combines all of my master’s studies. It is a professional awareness process in which I explain how and why I have become a costume designer. Additionally it describes the base of my interest towards the working method used in the play. I will be shedding light to the backgrounds of the director and the writer in relation to the topic of the text. I introduce the terminology of the gender diversity and theatre making and summarize the plot of the play. In my writing, I will be examining the dramaturgy of the play on the basis of read-throughs and a rehearsal workshop. This is described how they influenced the work process. I will be writing about performing a textual analysis, deciphering the visual images related to the play. I will also go over the plays dramaturgical decisions in terms of the range of roles. I will also be describing the illustrated scene map, which was created on the basis of the textual analysis, and how it served our work group. In this thesis I will be exposing the plays structures in the content and within the characters. I will be reflecting on the main character’s transformation from a boy to a woman, the corporality of puberty and gender blending with visual means. I will be writing about the design development of the costumes and how the general visual view of the stage began to take shape. In addition, I will write about my preparation for the rehearsal season of the play by describing my work in the wardrobe. I will also explain be the starting points for ‘Genderfuck’ and ‘Mudworkshops’, what we aimed with using them of exploring and serving our work process. I will also be examining what a costume means to an actor. I interviewed two actors in the play who changed their gender through costumes. In these interviews they emphasized the importance of how and what the costume feels to them. After explaining the work and writing process, I will then discuss about the role of dialog in theatre making. I will also be examining the importance of preplanning in process-like working, the implementation of the technical side of the work and the importance of rehearsal costumes in the design work. At the time Transfinlandia was finished, it was very popular topic and it had a political message. In this thesis I will be discussing how our theatre piece affected to the public debate of the transgender law.Description
