Abstract
The semiconductor industry is one of the most vital industries in the world, having immense geopolitical and economical importance. Taiwan is today one of the leading nations within the industry, with companies like UMC and TSMC. This literature review studies the growth of the semiconductor industry in Taiwan and analyses the most important factors behind the success. I go through the most important developments in the worldwide industry, as well as the early stages of the industry in Taiwan, to find how the collaboration between the Taiwanese government agencies and the private sector ultimately ended in success. I explain through economic theories, such as economies of scale and agglomeration, what advantages the Taiwanese industry had compared to the rest of the world, which led it to its current position. I find that the success of the Taiwanese industry was initially a government led effort, which birthed a successful industry able to compete internationally.Description
