Abstract

Surface sizing is an effective approach to increasing the strength properties of packaging papers made of recycled fiber material. Synthetic dry strength polymers have traditionally been applied in wet end operations. However, little research or no research has been devoted to adding dry strength polymer to a size press in the paper-making process. This thesis reviews the literature on base paper and surface sizing solution properties, as well as different penetration mechanisms and surface sizing equipment. The objective of this thesis is to determine and compare at three different concentrations the influence of two polymers on viscosity, pick-up and strength parameters. The feasibility of applying two dry strength polymers to liner and fluting material is assessed by determining an optimal operation window. In addition, the thesis will test the effect of the two polymers on uncoated fine paper in order to evaluate the potential of the polymers in other paper grades. Surface sizing was performed in the laboratory on a pond size press, using various enzymatic and dextrin starches. Viscosity was measured using the Brookfield LV (low viscosity) DV-II+ Pro viscometer. Wetting was detected in short contact times using a PDA (penetration dynamic analysis) device. Liner and fluting material were evaluated based on SCT, burst and CMT parameters. Viscosity and concentration of the starch increased the strength results of liner and fluting materials. The polymers increased the strength of all parameters at all surface sizing concentrations while simultaneously decreasing starch consumption. After polymer addition, the highest SCT CD strength was achieved in moderately degraded starches. An optimal starch-polymer concentration was observed at about 10% and a polymer dose of 2%-w/w. One of the polymers was found to provide an adequate operation window and significant economical feasibility. Surface sizing concentration was found to contribute the most to wetting. The polymer addition restrained wetting by only about 5%. The polymers mitigated the viscosity increase induced by retrogradation. Surface sizing in the laboratory differs from surface sizing at mill scale in terms of contact time, penetration mechanism and depth of penetration. The use of dry strength polymers provides a great advantage by improving the strength and decreasing the drying demand. Even when using high viscosity starch, the viscosity can nevertheless be maintained at a tolerable level while improving the strength. This study suggests that the use of polymers can greatly facilitate novel surface sizing techniques, such as spray sizing, by preventing retrogradation. Further work is required to determine the applicability of dry strength polymer reology at mill scale. The study of uncoated fine paper suggests that the dry strength polymer could be successfully applied to different paper and board grades, such as folding boxboard.

Pintaliimaus parantaa tehokkaasti kiertokuidusta valmistettujen pakkauspaperien lujuutta. Synteettisiä kuivalujuuspolymeerejä on perinteisesti lisätty paperikoneen märässä päässä. Kuivalujuuspolymeerien lisäämistä pintaliimapuristimella on kuitenkin tutkittu hyvin vähän. Tämä diplomityö tutkii pohjapaperin ja pintaliimausliuoksen ominaisuuksia, sekä tunkeumaan vaikuttavia mekanismeja ja pintaliimaus laitteita. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on määrittää ja verrata kahden kuivalujuuspolymeerin vaikutusta viskositeettiin, pick-upiin ja lujuusparametreihin eri kuiva-ainepitoisuuksissa. Kahden polymeerin sovellettavuutta laineri- ja aallotuskartongille arvioidaan määrittämällä optimaalinen käyttöikkuna. Lisäksi tässä diplomityössä testataan näiden kahden polymeerin soveltuvuutta päällystämättömälle hienopaperille, jotta voidaan arvioida polymeerien käyttömahdollisuuksia eri paperilajeilla. Pintaliimaus suoritettiin laboratoriossa lammikkopuristimella. Pintaliimauksessa käytettiin eri dextriini- ja entsyymipilkottuja tärkkejä. Viskositeetti mitattiin Brookfield LV (low viscosity) DV-II+ Pro -viskosimetrillä. Vettymistä lyhyillä kontaktiajoilla mitattiin PDA (penetration dynamic analysis) laitteella. Laineri- ja aallotuskartonkien ominaisuuksia arvioitiin SCT-, puhkaisu- ja CMT-parametreilla. Lujuustuloksiin vaikutti merkittävästi tärkkelyksen viskositeetti ja kuiva-ainepitoisuus. Kuivalujuuspolymeeri lisäsi lujuutta kaikissa kuiva-ainepitoisuuksissa ja kaikilla tärkeillä, alentaen samalla tärkin kulutusta. Lisättäessä polymeeriä korkein SCT CD tulos saavutetaan keskitasoisesti pilkotulla tärkillä. Optimaalinen kuiva-ainepitoisuus oli noin 10 % ja polymeeriannos noin 2 % kuiva-ainepitoisuudesta. Toiselle polymeereistä löydettiin riittävän laaja toimintaikkuna ja merkittävä hyöty. Kuiva-ainepitoisuudella oli suurin vaikutus vettymiseen. Kuivalujuuspolymeerin lisäys hidasti vettymistä vain 5 %. Kuivalujuuspolymeeri lievensi retrogradaation aiheuttamaa viskositeetin kasvua. Laboratorio-olosuhteissa tehdyt pintaliimaukset poikkeavat vastaavista tehdasmittakaavassa kontaktiajan, tunkeutumismekanismin ja tunkeutumissyvyyden takia. Kuivalujuuspolymeerin käyttö tarjoaa suuren edun lujuusparannuksen ja pienemmän kuivatustarpeen ansiosta. Lujuusparannuksia saatiin aikaan jopa korkean viskositeetin tärkkelyksellä viskositeetin pysyessä hyväksyttävällä tasolla. Uudet pintaliimaustekniikat voivat hyötyä suuresti retrogradaation haittojen lievenemisestä. Kuivalujuuspolymeerin reologian soveltuvuus tehdasmittakaavassa vaatii lisää tutkimusta. Hienopaperille tehdyt kokeet osoittavat, että kuivalujuuspolymeeria voisi käyttää muilla paperilajeilla, kuten taivekartongilla.
