Filter as an artistic tool for cinematography

Abstract

This thesis explores filters as a creative and expressive tool in cinematography. The focus is on their artistic value; how they shape the emotional tone, texture, and atmosphere of moving images. The first part introduces what filters are and examines their origins: how they were first invented and how their use has evolved from early film history all the way to digital cinema today. I’ve also included visual examples to show more clearly how filters influence the look and feeling of the image.

The second part of the thesis is built around a practical test shoot I conducted. Through this shoot, I analyse and reflect on how different types of filters behave in different lighting setups and how the different filters impact on the image and how their characteristics differ from each other's. I feel like, as in many other fields, it's important to understand and com-prehend how filters work technically to be able to use them as part of artis-tic and creative work.

Tämä opinnäytetyö tutkii filttereitä luovana ja ilmaisullisena työkaluna elokuvakuvauksessa,pPainopisteenä erityisesti niiden taiteellinen merkitys; kuinka ne muokkaavat elokuvan tunnetta, tunnelmaa, tekstuuria. Työn ensimmäinen osa kertoo, mitä filtterit ovat, ja käy läpi niiden taustan; miten ne on alun perin kehitetty ja millä tavoin niiden käyttö on muuttunut varhaisesta elokuvahistoriasta nykypäivän digitaaliseen elokuvaan. Mukana on myös visuaalisia esimerkkejä havainnollistamassa, miten filtterit vaikuttavat kuvan ilmeeseen.

Työn toinen osa perustuu tekemääni käytännön testikuvaukseen. Sen avulla analysoin, miten eri filtterityypit käyttäytyvät eri valotilanteissa, miten ne muokkaavat kuvaa ja miten niiden ominaisuudet eroavat toisistaan. Koen, että kuten monessa muussakin visuaalisessa työssä, myös elokuvauksessa on tärkeää ymmärtää filttereiden tekninen toiminta, jotta niitä voi käyttää harkitusti ja luovasti osana omaa ilmaisua.
