Abstract

Eutrophication of the Baltic Sea needs can be prevented by decreasing the wastewater loading. This can be done by enhancing the nutrient removal with biological and chemical processes combined with advanced treatment as sand filtration or biofiltration. The aim of this thesis is to determine the situation in the wastewater treatment plants, and evaluate the possibilities of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the Baltic Sea drainage basin. This thesis pertains to 9 countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. The process data is collected of the wastewater treatment plants from these countries. This serves as a database that is further analysed. The nutrient removal can be enhanced especially in the wastewater treatment plants in Latvia and Russia. Moreover, the level of nitrogen removal can be increased in Sweden and Finland, in where the mean reduction rate of nitrogen is less than 55 %. Nitrogen is removed by biological means but efficient phosphorus removal requires precipitation. In addition, the adaptability of biological phosphorus removal is dependent on the characteristics of wastewater, which is not favourable for biological phosphorus removal particularly in Finland. Numerous treatment plants have utilised advanced treatment to enhance nutrient removal. The most common methods for this are sand filtration and bio filtration. If more efficient nitrogen removal is wanted, over 50 % of the treatment plants would require volume addition in Finland, Sweden and Russia. Almost every wastewater treatment plant would need to enhance nitrogen removal to achieve the reduction rate of 95 %. If the concentration of 0.5 mg/l of total phosphorus is desired, most of the WWTPs should upgrade their treatment methods. Sand filtration and chemicals would be a recommended upgrade method, as it enables very low phosphorus levels with the good operation skills.

Itämeren rehevöitymisen estämiseksi on tärkeää vähentää jäteveden aiheuttamaa kuormitusta poistamalla tehokkaasti jätevedessä olevia ravinteita. Tämä on mahdollista hyödyntämällä biologisia ja kemiallisia puhdistusprosesseja yhdistettynä tertiäärikäsittelyyn, kuten hiekkasuodatukseen tai biologiseen jälkisuodatukseen. Tämän työn tavoitteina on määrittää jätevedenpuhdistamoiden tämän hetkinen tilanne ja tehostetun typen- ja fosforinpoiston mahdollisuudet Itämeren valuma-alueella. Työ on rajattu sisältämään seuraavat maat: Tanska, Viro, Suomi, Saksa, Latvia, Liettua, Puola, Venäjä ja Ruotsi. Näiden maiden jätevedenpuhdistamoista kerätään prosessitiedot, joiden pohjalta luodaan lähemmin tarkasteltava tietokanta. Ravinteidenpoistoa voidaan tehostaa etenkin Latvian ja Venäjän puhdistamoilla. Typenpoiston tasoa on mahdollista nostaa myös Ruotsin ja Suomen puhdistamoilla, missä typen reduktio on keskimäärin alle 55 %. Typpeä poistetaan biologisesti, mutta tehokas fosforinpoisto vaatii saostuskemikaalin. Biologisen fosforinpoiston käytettävyyteen vaikuttaa jäteveden laatu, mikä ei ole etenkään Suomessa suotuisa prosessin hyödyntämiseksi. Useat laitokset ovat hyödyntäneet tertiäärisiä käsittelymenetelmiä tehostaakseen ravinteidenpoistoa. Näistä menetelmistä useimmin käytetään hiekka- ja biologista suodatusta. Jos typenpoistoa halutaan tehostaa, se vaatisi lisätilavuutta yli 50 %:lla puhdistamoista Suomessa, Ruotsissa ja Venäjällä. Lähes jokaisen puhdistamon pitäisi tehostaa typenpoistoa, että 95 %:n reduktio olisi mahdollinen. Kokonaisfosforipitoisuuden 0.5 mg/l saavuttaminen edellyttäisi puhdistusprosessin tehostamista yli puolella laitoksista. Puhdistusprosessin parantaminen hiekkasuodatusta ja kemikaaleja käyttämällä on suositeltavaa, koska tällä tekniikalla on mahdollista saavuttaa erittäin alhaisia fosforipitoisuuksia taitavalla ajotavalla.
