Abstract
The study presented in this thesis aims at identifying different elements of lighting visual comfort. It starts by identifying the elements of sufficiency, pleasantness and colour rendering before it expands on glare. This study is reflected on LED luminaires, and based on the previous experiments of Kasahara and Tashiro; general hypotheses were made on limiting discomfort glare. Further to that, a visual comfort experiment was performed in a simulated office room to confirm those hypotheses alongside presenting general suggestions on how LED luminaires should be set up in office environments for the comfort of the employees. Another goal for this thesis is to test the current standards for office lighting on real life office employee subjects. In this regard, the guidelines for lighting design set in the latest European standard EN 12464-1 (issued June, 2011) were met in an office simulation experiment, and their settings were compared to those of the subjects' preferences. Taken into consideration, were the impacts of the office room lighting on the pleasantness of the scene, and how subjects perceive their performance and stress in the tested lighting conditions. The results of this experiment and research are presented, and general conclusions are deducted for the sake of achieving a better LED-lit office environment.Description
