Abstract

With product development increasing in complexity due to heightened competition and the demand for innovative products, the incorporation of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly crucial. Companies across all industries are developing and utilizing various AI applications to improve efficiency, enhance creativity, and augment product quality. The aim of this thesis is to conduct a comprehensive review of the uses, effects, and limitations of AI across all stages of product development. Ulrich and Eppinger's six-phase framework is used to categorize the findings and demonstrate how various AI techniques from natural language processing, machine learning, computer vision, and generative AI can be employed in each phase. Examples include finding market opportunities and predicting project success in the Planning phase, automating user needs assessment and generating unique concepts in the Concept Development phase, optimizing designs and classifying parts in the System-Level and Detail Design phases, and defect detection and automation in the Production phase.
